From Place to Site: from Christo to Kawamata

Feb. 26 (Tue) - Apr. 6 (Sun), 2008

Exhibition of March 2008 is works by artists who are working with their specific sites.
For artists who are creating an object, space and the work had definite relationships. Since canvas was invented and toward the early 20th century, there was a time when art was thought to be something to enclosing the "real" space enclosed within a picture frame. But around in 1970's artists started to work within the real space. Christo who wrap buildings and islands in his large projects, or Tadashi Kawamata who made the real space into something different using lumber. When realizing a large project many artists created a "plan" before and during considering and developing their projects. For many artists, these "plans" are not merely construction drawings, but also another indevidual pieces of artworks showing their creativity imagination.
There also are artists like Toshiya Takahama who is usually working on flat dimention but developed thier ablilities by experiencing to work on real space and sites. This exhibition focuses on the artist's creativity in flat picture plane.
