Monotone World

White clouds and deep black darkness: Black and white colors are considered common color in our daily lives, but pure white and pure black are actually hard to find in nature. The two colors may be at the both ends when one excludes various colors from our colorful visual world, and try to recapture the world with light and dark. The most interesting point when facing works composed only with black and white may be the placement of the two opposite colors, their contrast or balance. How back lines dynamically or delicately appear on white surface, how black forms are being placed, and how the shape looks. Looking at black lines and forms in Takako Masaki’s works in such view points, her works become even more attractive. In case of a set of her works composed of two panels, the interest may not merely be inside each of her panels. The placement or balance of two square panels on the wall, their relationships and the space between the panels amplify the impact of the whole composition. The interest in Chiharu Inoue’s monochrome photos may not only be the plants taken in the photo. They are even more interesting because of plants are dedicately placed like black shadows in contrast to the background. Please discover the fresh impression in the monotone world shown in the exhibition.
