Date 2011. Feb.18 (fri) - Mar.13 (sun)
Hours 11:00-19:00 closed on Mondays .
Norihito Tsuchiya uses unique techniques in his genuine quest to create contemporary Japanese paintings. He states, “Japanese paintings are made up of the two extremely simple elements of “subject figure” and “background” to create an unusual sense of space. The bipolarity of “something” and “nothing” is its most distinctive feature, and I think this is the essence of the aesthetic sense of the Japanese people. Viewed three-dimensionally, this somewhat unpolished sense of space results in a quest for the purity of such flat artworks.” This is the relationship between “base” and “figure.”
Tsuchiya’s works use semi-transparent Mino Japanese paper and foil for the “base” to create depth, and the “figure” is recreated using samplings from classics that are replicated irregularly using a single, opaque color. The figure is emphasized by the barely visible yet intensely bright, transparent colors that surround it. The concept for the pieces is this very production process, which creates them from scratch.
Of special mention is how the delicate changes in hues is brought about, by making depressions in the foam resin, stretching Japanese paper across and pressing foil on it, and filling and layering the depressions with coloring materials.
The surface has a flat finish, but a depth emerges that cannot be replaced by the bipolarity of “something” and “nothing,” and “base” and “figure.” This gives Tsuchiya’s works light and shadow, and extension of space, bringing the gently drawn plant stems, leaves, flowers and fruit to life.
There are 30 pieces on display at this exhibition. We hope that you can take the time to view and provide coverage on this exhibition.
