“Awahana (bubble flower)” that is produced from fast dripping of volatile oil on a half dried vermeil Japanese lacquer.
“Ginnami (silver wave)” that is produced from putting silver gilt
on the surface of lacquer, smoking it by sulfur, and whetting the bottom of wave patterns in lacquer by a whet stone. These are representative works of Yui Higashibata. These works are displayed sometimes randomly, sometimes in order in the plural number rather than displayed individually. It is always overwhelming to see her works in aggregate.
Is that because of the aesthetic which comes from the material of lacquer, or simply the dynamic design? Of course, it would be both. However, the surprise of Higashibata’s challenge to explore new expression through the artist’s techniques could be the natural answer. Higashibata has free and vigorous styles: “I hardly sketch for creating works. I follow my hand just like live performance” Dynamically but delicately, new expression are created one after another while weaving accident into necessity.
Yui Higashibata raised in the family engaging in lacquer work (Makieshi) in Kyoto, trained under a lacquerer after high school. He has a unique career that he learned design in a university to expand more horizon of his creation, and involved space production belonging to a design office in architecture. At his studio where is inherited from his grandfather in Machiya, there are various samples of lacquer layers for a finish.
“As a painter chooses next colors and shapes from traces of painting on a canvas, I attempt to react honestly to my work while carefully observing the accidental changes appearing on the surface of lacquer, through my shared time with materials. Painted surface loses the materialness due to the nature of work process as the work is completed, and heads to inorganic state afterwards. But I am fascinated by the in-between process tactilely, I consider to bring such accidental texture in my work. I feel the sense of vivid contrast in the small connection between my final image of work and an actual piece of surface which is continuously generated one-time-only happening. Through accepting the discovery and the encounter, I would like to create unexpected unique works which are freely released from tradition as well as myself.” (Yui Higashibata)
At this exhibition, approximately 40 works including a plant designed work “Kusaami (grass knitting)” which is constructed of several divided pieces will be exhibited. As a painting work, his potential challenge for lacquer will be freely expressed.
