Gallery

Miguel Aquilizan is currently having his first solo show in Japan at Art Front Gallery.
He has worked as a stylist, DJ and a model, he was a vocalist for an experimental, punk-electro band.

Through his broad activities he always looks for seeds of his art, strolling about the city of Manilla where he got back from Brisbane after more than ten years.

"HEIRLOOM"
AUGUST 10, 2013 - SEPTEMBER 3, 2013 / The Drawing Room, Philippines.

“This is my first show pieces in Australia. I started collecting dear horn or scull altering their meaning in the new form. At first, I mainly used heirlooms of our family, including antiques.”

"SOFT POWER"
2013 / SILVER PLATED TEAPOT, BONE CHINA DISH, ANIMAL-SKIN DRUM, GLASS AND BRONZE BEADED NECKLACE, LEATHER AND METAL.

“This piece, for example, is made of tea pot , borne-china plates tied with leather string. This idea of binding things together, for me, it is like making tension with those objects. Even if you do not know the function of these found objects, you can renew its life in new context. Plural objects based on plural culture can be induced from what I call obejcts-collage.”

“This is our atelier at Fruits Juice Factory renovated by my parents (Alfredo & Isabel Aquilizan), to offer the artist residency where many artists get together. I like seeing all the objects around me to be picked up for specific pieces. Some objects are from Japan.”

“I also like making small details, sometimes to find narrative stories behind it. I started to have direction in my practice, and my work now reflects finding myself. My particular choices of materials changed, being more filtered and object specific.”

"Mutation N°2" / 2019

Japan Surplus, Philippines.

“There is a shop called Japanese Surplus in Philippines, where you can get new resources. So while collecting all these objects I started discovering and combining them. I love the idea of mixture of plural identities.”

Nanay Clarita`s Store, Quiapo, Philippines.

“This shop in Philippines sells the cross for protection that they use for superstition. People here still believe in mythical stories, ritual or iconography. “

ibiennale 2019 / Honolulu, Hawaii

“This is a Kimono work that I exhibited in I biennale in Hawaii.”

Miguel Aquilizan "A PILGRIMAGE; SOULS RETRIEVED, CEREMONIES CONSTRUCTED"
MAY 12, 2018 - JUNE 5, 2018 / The Drawing Room, Philippines.

Miguel himself with plural identities of Philippines, Australian and Japan, easily goes beyond the cultural border in his work. Endowed with new combination or new meaning, his object pieces are on view at our Art Front Gallery (Room-02).
Please enjoy his own style, different from Alfredo & Isabel’s.”
