Tadashi Kawamata work's column updated: unknown project of Begijnhof, Kortrijk 1990

We introduce the maquette for Begijnhof, Kortrijk Plan 14 by Tadashi Kawamata . Begijnhof Project in Kortrijk, Belgium is one of the important works of Kawamata in Europe. In April 1988, Kawamata was invited by Kanaal Art Foundation to create a project within the inner old city of Kortrijk. One month later the artist arrived there to visit the city, and immediately chose the Beguinage St. Elisabeth as the spot for his installation, because of the enclosed calm or even isolated situation of the place. After getting permission of its use from the Department of Public Welfare, more than 143 cubic meters of wood were brought in and, with a few assistants, a new beguinage or convent was built. (Beginhof’s history go backs to thirteenth century where women gathered together in a community called Begijnhof during absence of their men for war.) This specific site the Begijnhof is a metaphor of traditional European conservation through which a sense of historical continuity has been fostered. In contrast to Japanese provisional culture, which is anti-accumulative but sustainable at the same time, the artist may have had an ambition to challenge the action of making works in both culture. With the respect for the location, Kawamata constructed in Kortrijk a wooden composition in the small alleys and lanes of the community. It expanded to all the area of inner city, giving the image of a huge cathedral which was buttressed. In the early winter of 1990, when the notorious stormy winds began to blow, the elderly local people swore that Kawamata’s wooden construction held up and protected the ancient beguinage, while other returned home, convinced the beguinage was just under construction. The artist is conscious of such reactions, for that very reason he selected the site. Frauenbad, another project in Europe developed on the river Limmat in 1993. It was a floating wooden structure inspired by the traditional styled swimming pools for the locals with divided use for man and women. The construction involved some jobless people of the city. As Kawamata explains, “I have more faith in connections than in materials. Working together and developing camaraderie with others is what most interests me, and it's fine if the completed work is almost a byproduct of that process. Ultimately, it's not so much about simply saying that there's a finished product, and that we did all this just for the sake of production; rather, I'm using art for the sake of building connections. So if one of my works gets destroyed, it's not such a tragedy, because I will make more works. I like this idea of continuously rolling onward.” Reference: Kawamata Begijnhof Kortrik, edited by Kanaal Art Foundation, 1991 Art-it interview by Andrew Maerkle, November 2011 Exhibition Tadashi Kawamata: Crossroads Venue : Kiyotsu Warehouse Museum Open day: October 28, 29, November 3-5, 11-12 The Exhibition Starting Over, Under Construction is finished. JAPAN ALPS ART FESTIVAL 2017 started! Introduction of installation work of Allora & Calzadilla

OKU-NOTO TRIENNALE 2017 has finally started on 3. September. We are pleased to introduce bran-new installation art of Allora & Calzadilla. Living in Puerto Rico, Allora & Calzadilla, work as a couple unit on the country with complex history vis-à-vis the United States in name of Suzerain state. That is, they have to obey the U.S. Forces and to die for United States once a war outbreaks, while they are independent in Sports field. It is imagined that there is a gap between their people earning for a true independence and those Americans. The artwork itself is composed of an ordinary Japanese ship and its gleaming gold eagle on the bow. If not uttered loudly, this eagle might be a symbol of America. Figureheads have been generally accepted as the guardian for the ship in the West, while dragons appear in ancient Eastern ships as well. The artist may have created the eagle figure as guardian against many difficulty from the outer world. However, the eagle seems too big or unbalanced, or even seems to be racking the ship itself against the stormy sea and wind from the Continent. We Japanese see the Russia, the Korea and the China across the sea, and feel the conflict among the islands around Japan. We suspect the guardian as the eagle which should protect the ship from foreign enemy. The artists, as we do, may have thought of their homeland. Cai Guo-Qiang participates in Cultural City of East Aisa 2017 Kyoto

We are pleased to announce Cai Guo-Qiang’s developed installation of our project in Kyoto. This time, Cai's large ship will be on view in the site of Nijojo, Kyoto. This wood ship was originally created in Todaiji temple, Nara with assistance of ship carpenters from his homeland Quanzhou, China. They made it in traditional way going back to Sung Dynasty where the cultural exchange in East Asia was more active than we imagine today. Also, ship has been one of main themes of the artist as we have seen his credited "Ninth Wave" (2014) allowing the ship fowing in the river of Shanghai. The dynamic image of the ship transporting culture from country to country is still alive in the contemporary Cai's ship. The whole process of ship making has been covered in the document video up to launch, the water ceremony, and will be available together with drawings and other documents, all testifying the creation of present work. Nijojo, initially built by Yeyasu Tokugawa, offers an elegant context to Cai's ship where we can find a new charm of the artwork. Cai is developing the concept of Bonsai out of this ship. Please visit Kyoto to see this developed version. If you have any questions to the work, please contact us at contact@artfrontgallery.com

Artwork of Toshikatsu Endo completed at JAPAN ALPS ART FESTIVAL 2017

Toshikatsu Endo has just completed his artwork Trieb-Forest in Rain at Miyanomori Natural Park, Ohmachi City in Nagano Prefecture. The artist tries to develop his concept of “Water Pillar” all over the forest, the stage of his art in this open-air exhibition. Endo in his long career since seventies has focused in natural elements such as wood, air, fire and water. The water has often been visualized with its image of brutal force. This time, while following his own concept, he seems to shed light on the water as a material reduced to ecosystem in his installation, and we hope the visitor will experience the power of the work at the venue. Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale has been running since 2000 and the number of artists participated in the festival exceeds 700 with number of artworks still kept and loved close to 200, making the region a unique and attractive field of arts to visit.
