Hisaharu Motoda and Oscar Oiwa at The Shoto Museum of Art, Shibuya

Hisaharu Motoda and Oscar Oiwa will participate in the group exhibition "Beyond the End: Ruins in Art History" at The Shoto Museum of Art from December 8, 2018-January 31, 2019. Ruins and ancient remains had been depicted repeatedly in landscape paintings throughout the history of Western art. Admiring the views of ruins and drawing them – this aesthetic was transmitted to modern Japanese art through contact with Western culture. From Hubert Robert the painter and Piranesi the etcher, renowned painters of ruins in the eighteenth century, Constable from the nineteenth century, Henri Rousseau, Magritte and Delvaux in the twentieth century, artists have drawn ruins. Some Japanese painters have also followed this theme: Aodo Denzen in the Edo Period, Fujishima Takeji and Oka Shikanosuke in modern times, and Motoda Hisaharu, Oscar Oiwa and Nomata Minoru in the present day. For some reason, people have been fascinated by the sights of the distant past or distant future that has been destroyed or will be destroyed by the passage of time. This exhibition gathers works depicting ruins and city landscapes in the past or near future, from old Western masters to contemporary Japanese art, to provide insight into this phenomenon. New video by Mounir Fatmi at Teien Art Museum, Tokyo.

Exotic x Modern: French Art Deco and inspiration afar presents Mounir Fatmi’s newly produced video “Human Factor”. As his solo show at Art Front Gallery toward the end of 2017 showed the “Periphery Vision” the through his installation and photos. This time, he prolonged into the old days of 1920 in search for periphery of that time, the North Africa and Indochina, decomposing “L’inhumaine” by Marcel L’herbier (1923) considered as manifesto of Art Deco. Fatmi grouped the creator such as Paul Poiret in the gorgeous and modern installation of that time, while trying to show another facet of Art Deco influenced by colonial influence. In fact, according to Fatmi, great painters as Henri Matisse or Paul Clee stayed in North Africa for their creation, and it is well known that African masks were the inspiring source for Picasso or Fernand Leger. Also it should be noted that Surrealists were anti-colonial movement although they were contemporary to these movements. Fatmi tries to show the link between primitivism and colonial Art Deco through his “Human Factor”. So far, Fatmi has tried to present his multi-rooted identity by means of experimental videos. Going back to the twenties and thirties this, he shed light to another “periphery” in the history. As he believes, a culture can only exist viewed from another angle or culture. Geometrical drawing overlapped with the beautiful art deco scenery will give you a feeling of newly produced fragments of vision. Cai Guo-Qiang's solo exhibition "Flora Commedia" at The Uffizi Galleries

We are pleased to announce Cai Guo-Qiang's solo exhibition "Flora Commedia" at The Uffizi Galleries in Firenze, Italy. November 18, on Piazzale Michelangelo, Cai Guo-Qiang ignited the daytime explosion event City of Flowers in the Sky, inspired by Botticelli’s Renaissance masterpiece Primavera and overlooking the city of Florence, to splendidly unveil the exhibition. Flora Commedia was born from a visit to the Uffizi Galleries in 2017, which included the Boboli Gardens of the House of Medici, the Pitti Palace, the Department of Prints and Drawings. The artist uses flowers as a vessel to manifest the spirit of the Renaissance: its desires and pleasures, its connection with nature, the awakening of humanity and its new perception of the human body. Flora Commedia is a part of a broader multi-year exhibition project for Cai Guo-Qiang, An Individual’s Journey through Western Art History, which has arrived in Florence after the Pushkin Museum in Moscow and the Museo Nacional Del Prado in Madrid, and then in February 2019 will be at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, before ultimately returning to the East as a culminating presentation of this odyssey. Involving different aspects of the artist’s creativity, the exhibition joins his outdoor daytime explosion event with the intimate moments of igniting gunpowder on canvas and paper. Cai’s technique, refined and complex, established a close exchange with Nature while juxtaposing with the masters of the past in the museum’s nearby rooms to trigger a dialogue with the surrounding art. ■Flora Commedia Date: 2018/11/20 - 2019/02/17 Venue: The Uffizi Galleries in Firenze, Italy

special exhibition "Crossword -letter and image-" @ Daikanyama Tsutaya Books

Our current exhibit at Anjin cafe in Daikanayama T-site is featuring on the relationship between text and image. Since this cafe space opened toward the end of 2012, it has attracted many guests with its collection of backnumber mgazines in cultural field. Playfulness or decorativeness long cherished in Japanese culture or art is still alive in some of the contemporary art, and it is this character that we would like to present in this exhibit Crossword through books and letters. Some artists handle letters or alphabets to generate new meaning with different materials such as Japanese coins or maps. The newly created image can be read as a symbolic phrases of peace or war, or even Buddhist sutra. Others tries to alter the form of books through folding each pages or pasted the pages with resin to make it appear like sculpture. The printed "I" by drypoint onto a hand mirror in various language will reflect the society we are living. The generation as well as used materials range largly to show the continuous interest on the side of artists in creating the world of crosswords-letter and image today. ■special exhibition "Crossword -letter and image-" Sep.17th(Mon) - Dec. 9th(Sun) 2018 Place:Anjin café at Daikanyama T-site 2nd Floor, Daikanyama, Shibuya, Tokyo Exhibited Artists: Naoyo Fukuda, Yumi Tohyama, Kiyoshi Awazu, Yoichiro Otani, Michiko Isono, Takahiro Miyahara, Katsumi Asaba, Takahiro Sagawa, Masayuki Kishimoto, Yui Usui, Yukyo Yamamoto, Aya Murakami, Kaoru Murakami, Alisa Chinen, Bunpei Kado, Takanao Kaneko photo: Naoyo Fukuda "Wing The Secret Garden" /h225 x w300 x d85/ book with folded pages

Tadashi Kawamata : Altering Home in Culture City of East Asia 2018 Kanazawa.

Tadashi Kawamata's newest project is being exhibited in the group show "Altering Home" in Culture City of East Asia 2018, Kanazawa. Artist Statement Kawamata: Kanazawa Squatters’ Project For this international exhibition held as part of the “Culture Citiy of East Asia” program of Kanazawa City, I planned a project of turning an entire building located close to the museum into a work of art. This project was made possible through the good offices of the owner of the Hakuichi Building, who agreed to rent the whole building to me during the exhibition period. I will stay in the building and work on the project while also introducing my earlier work. And I hope to present the building in its entirety, both inside and out, as a work of art. Come to think of it, this creative endeavor is drawn from the series of apartment projects conducted from around 1982 to 1986. The work may appear an abruptly-materialized unknown object, totally incongruous with the surrounding landscape, which includes the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. It is my hope, however, that something different will come into view from this standpoint. But first, come and experience this Squatters’ Building for yourself. Kouseki Ono at Ginza T-site the Sacred of Retina.

Kouseki Ono participates in a goup show the Sacred of Retina in Ginza T-site. Together with Okada and Komuro, Ono elaborates his microcosmos through his screen print works: hundreds of layers of color created by repetitive bodily action of printing with each dot which is actually accumulation of ink. These "pillars of ink" can be transplanted onto cicada shell, for example. The amazing color scheme produced spontaneously is one of the charms of Ono work. Starting with print work, Ono has followed career of both two and three dimensional works. In 2015, he was awarded the VOCA Prize, one of the most prestigious prizes recommended by curators of museums. His work was also associated with that of Claude Monet to join the exhibit Monet's Legacy currently on view at Yokoyama Museum of Art. Ono's work questions the fluctuation of our seeing by decomposing the color into different layers of ink which can be recomposed in our retina level. We are pleased to announce Shinji Ohmaki's installation in France, Paris from 14 July – August 18, 2018 at Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild in Paris. ■FUKAMI, une plongée dans l’esthétique japonaise Tradition and modernity, stream and forms, something ephemeral or eternal, are the features often observed as contradictory aspects of one thing. Japanese aesthetic could be called as co-existence of opponent factors. Presented in the Hotel Salomon de Rothschild, this exhibitShinji Ohmaki, Japanese artist, was conceived by Yuko Hasegawa, one of the commissioners of Japonisme 2018 and director of Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo. Leandro Erlich: Construction of Reality @ HOW Art Museum / Shanghai, China

We are pleased to announce Leandro Erlich's solo exhibition in Shanghai, China. ■Leandro Erlich: Construction of Reality Duration:June 1, 2018 – October 15, 2018 Venue: HOW Art Museum (Shanghai), No 1, Lane 2277, Zuchongzhi Rd., Pudong New District, Shanghai Organized by HOW Art Museum Supported by Galleria Continua, Art Front Gallery This show brings together over thirty artworks by Erlich, covering his large-scale interactive installations, video installations, and photography, including thirteen monumental interactive installations that offer the audience uncanny experiences via optical illusions. By transforming the architectural spaces through jarring reflections and fascinating labyrinths that disrupt the viewers’ sense of balance and orientation, the artist invites us to question our normal perception of everyday experience. Leandro Erlich: Construction of Reality will be on view from June 1, 2018 through October 15, 2018. Titled Construction of Reality (in Chinese “虚(xū).构(gòu)” – a combination of 虚(xū), meaning illusion, and 构(gòu), meaning construction) this exhibition unfolds the complex duality that characterizes Leandro Erlich’s artistic approach: by way of investigating the ephemeral, illusive aspect of the visual world, he recreates or even reverses the given logic of architectural space. For this solo show at HOW Art Museum, Erlich will present the most recent version of his series Reflective Optical Illusion Building, a new interactive installation in resonance with the historical and cultural landscape of Shanghai. Named Building – Shanghai Bell Tower (Hanging on Time), this piece appropriates the style of the main building of the former Shanghai Art Museum, now known as the Shanghai History Museum. While being “relocated" within the HOW Art Museum’s exhibition space and reflected in large mirrors, this “bell tower”, with its distinctive architectural style of 20th-century Shanghai, will be reactivated through its surreal interactions with the spectators. Within this delightful interruption of normal life, strangers can go beyond its constraints. Other showcased works include Staircase, The Classroom, Lost Garden…, which as a group make up the magical world constructed by the artist.

New works of Aki Yamamoto : Dawning in Spring

We are exhibiting in Art Front Gallery more than 20 pieces of Aki Yamamoto in current exhibit. In addition, one can see some recent 10 pieces in the office space. We are pleased to introduce a new work "Dawning in Spring" depicting the joyful landscape of the spring season. The works of Yamamoto are based on cutout from landscape that the artist views in everyday life. However, it is impossible to grasp at once to depict every corner of the landscape unlike photograph which, according to the artist, records everything as Vermeer in seventeenth century tried to paint all with emerging camera obscula. For Yamamoto, “seeing” is “missing” or leaving something missing, where her own perspective will be reflected in the picture plane. She prefers taking incomplete herself in her work, rather than depicting everything completely, through “replacing” the incomplete parts with her own color and form. Pic: "Dawning in Spring" 2018, 1940 x 2600mm, oil on canvas During the exhibition period, we schedule a talk session by Aki Yamamoto and Takao Tsutsumi, President of the Sezon Museum of Modern Art. Mr. Tsutsumi is very at home in both Japanese and overseas art scene. He will be presenting his topics on Yamamoto’s work to put her in the context of art today. We wish your kind participation in this event. ■Date : April, 19 (Thu)19:30- ■Admission : Free ■Venue : Art Front Gallery ■Reservation : tsuboi@artfront.co.jp Session will be followed by a reunion at the bistro next to the gallery. The first and second editions of the Quintet exhibitions focused on the theme of ‘landscape’, while the third was focused on ‘nature’, and each time large numbers of viewers have appreciated the fascinating reverberations these shared themes create between the works of the different artists. In this fourth edition of the series, “QuintetⅣ,” we present 83 recent or new works by Emiko Aoki, Miyuki Takenaka, Migiwa Tanaka, Misa Funai and Kumiko Moroi. All five are artists who after graduation from art university have continued their artistic activities with strong principle and conviction, showing their works in exhibitions such as our museum’s Outstanding Rising Artists Exhibition and FACE exhibitions, the VOCA Exhibition and the Shell Art Award Exhibition, and in the process have built their own unique worlds of artistic expression. The theme for this year’s Quintet exhibition is “Between the Figurative and the Abstract.” Paul Gauguin said that ‘Art is an abstraction,’ and he sought to bring new concepts and philosophical elements into his painting. Although it is surely with no conscious awareness that they are following Gauguin’s revolutionary precedent, the five women participating in this exhibition are artists whose works, composed of lines drawn from the intellect and colors that flow intuitively from their sensibilities, are created within the amplitude of the world they perceive and the self they must express. Viewing these works, created by artists who are our contemporaries, certainly offers us a profound glimpse into “Zeitgeist” the spirit of the age we live in. In closing, we wish to express our gratitude to the participating artists and collectors for lending us the works on display and to all who have offered invaluable assistance in making this exhibition possible. We also hope that participation in this Quintet exhibition will prove to be a springboard to further achievement and success for these artists.
