Keisuke Yamaguchi @ Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art

Keisuke Yamaguchi’s “Backing forward” is held on Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art. (also, he has been participating in the Related Exhibition of ART SETOUCHI @ DAIKANYAMA T-SITE anjin café) ■Keisuke Yamaguchi: Backing forward June 8 - September 4, 2019 at Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, Hirosima (1-1 Hijiyama koen Minami-ku Hiroshima-city Japan) Artist Keisuke Yamaguchi (1962- ) first attracted attention when he debuted his oversize copperplates of arks in the late 1980’s. Since then he has created works in different forms, including not only print art and engravings, but also paintings and three-dimensional works, with motifs ranging from flowers and seeds to the heart and the entire human body. Meanwhile, the artist began keeping a daily journal on March 14, 2011, three days after the Great East Japan Earthquake. He later named the journal After the Quake: Notes, and has never missed a single day of keeping it ever since. In the journal, the artist painstakingly transcribes daily news articles with information about nuclear power generation, expressing his will to move forward on his feet against the steady stream of reality. “Humans cannot see the future; we can only see the past or the present moment. So it is as if we are moving forward with our back first,” Yamaguchi once remarked. Recently, he has been committed to making large-size paintings with overlapping human faces, achieving ever-stronger imagery. The artist inspires us to search for a way to continue moving forward despite carrying the weight of the past and its memories, which have made it difficult just to move in a straight line.

Oscar Oiwa @ 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan

Oscar Oiwa’s solo show “Journey to the Light” is held on 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa in Japan. For available works of Oiwa, please visit artist page of Art Front Gallery: (Click here) With brilliant, light-filled colors and dynamic spatial structures, Oscar OIWA creates vivid depictions of contemporary society that are infused with critical and humorous qualities. Born in São Paulo, Brazil to Japanese parents in 1965, Oiwa splits his time between Tokyo and New York, making works that share both the perspective of an ordinary urban dweller and an objective bird’s eye view. Addressing themes such as the cities and societies he inhabits and environmental problems, Oiwa freely integrates photographs, printed matter, and images from the Internet to realize a unique worldview that wavers between reality and fantasy, artifice and nature, and light and shadow. This exhibition explores Oiwa’s vision through a collection of approximately 60 works, with an emphasis on recent efforts, and a 27-meter-long drawing executed on a wall in the museum. In addition, the composer Chad CANNON was invited to take part in a collaborative project, in which Oiwa’s work served as the inspiration for a magnificent symphony that coalesces with the paintings. With any luck, the light that Oiwa pursues in his work while traveling all over the world will reawaken a sense of hope, helping us deal with the difficulty of living in the current era. ■Oscar OiwaJourney to the Light Period : 2019.4.27 (Sat.)- 2019.8.25 (Sun.) 10:00 - 18:00 (until 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays) Venue : 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa(1-2-1 Hirosaka, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa, Japan 920-8509) 【Oscar Oiwa: Artist Talks】 Date/time: April 27 (Sat) 14:00–15:30 (doors open 13:30) Guest: Emile Tsuru-Devaux (Japanese Brazilian Art Researcher) 17:00–19:00 (doors open 16:30) Guest: Chad Cannon (Composer) Venue: Lecture Hall, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa

The technique of turning intricate wax forms into casts allows her to produce pieces combining the hard, solid texture of metal, with a dedication to detailed design. This exhibition presents works produced out of an earnest attitude to engage with metal and forge a dialogue with the method of metal casting: KUNO’s display of high-density formative aesthetics applied to robust metal creating works on an urban theme, that conjure up visions of a writhing, proliferating metropolis, morphing as it is constructed. (For available works of Kawamata, Isobe, Oiwa and Kaneuji, please visit artist page of Art Front Gallery: Click here) This exhibition will survey the Japanese art of the past 100 years, from the 1910s to 2010s, through works mainly in the museum's collection. Its aim to show how the artists, by taking a discerning critical perspective, have selected strands of already established and radically new styles and techniques, and woven their own distinctive worlds. From the 1920s era of KISHIDA Ryusei to the present day, artists in each generation have studied the issues specific to their time and created works that critically examine the "circumstances of Japanese art." In its narrative on modern and contemporary Japanese art, the exhibition will not situate the artists in the context of a static view of history; instead it will look at the particular practice of the artist who, by selectively adopting elements, was able to arouse his subject. It will furthermore display artworks whose subject matter relates to the Kiba district where the museum is located, a community that has witnessed dramatic change these 100 years. By surveying the artistically important works that punctuate Japanese modern / contemporary art history, in galleries on all three of the museum's floors, the exhibition will profile the history of one hundred years. ■Weavers of Worlds-A Century of Flux in Japanese Modern / Contemporary Art- Date: Friday, 29 March - Sunday, 16 June 2019 Hours: 10:00 - 18:00 Venue: Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo(4-1-1 Miyoshi, Koto-ku, Tokyo 135-0022 Japan)

Koseki Ono @ Sezon Museum of Modern Art in Karuizawa.

Koseki Ono will participate in the group exhibition "The ENGINE – It induces us to… / Koseki Ono×Mitsumasa Kadota" at Sezon Museum of Modern Art in Karuizawa, Nagano from April 20, 2019. (For available works of Ono, please visit artist page of Art Front Gallery: Click here) ■The ENGINE – It induces us to… / Koseki Ono×Mitsumasa Kadota Work by Koseki Ono and Mitsumasa Kadota is pervaded with colour. It springs from the artists’ bodies, but goes far beyond even what the artists themselves intended. Koseki Ono pursues a special brand of printing using numerous layers of ink, imposed in multiple impressions. This imparts changing colours reminiscent of flowers blooming in profusion. Depths and gradations are like those of a three-dimensional tableau. The sight of an animal skull, for example, or a cicada shell, proliferates with pigment and will stimulate viewers’ tactile as well as visual sense. The ENGINE is an exhibition on the theme of driving forces in creation. It investigates what emerges from the artists themselves and which cannot be captured by existing formats and techniques. The exhibition shows work by two artists, displayed alongside pieces from the Sezon Museum of Modern Art’s own collection. It explores ‘engines’ that ignite creative work, and the key of ‘colour’. This exhibition will liberate the mind and invite viewers from the concept of each work, into wider and unknown sensations. Venue : Sezon Museum of Modern Art(2140 Serigasawa, Nagakura, Karuizawa, Kitasaku, Nagano 389-0111, Japan) Period : April 20 - September 1, 2019

Shinji Ohmaki : "Time in contemporary sculpture"

Shinji Ohmaki has been participating in the exhibition "Time in contemporary sculpture" at The University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts in Ueno by June 2, 2019. (For available works of Ohmaki, please visit artist page of Art Front Gallery: Click here) This is the 10th sculpture exhibition that the Sculpture Department of the Tokyo University of the Arts started planning in 1997. The Department’s teaching staff set the themes based on their individual perspectives, and plan an exhibition that searches for the meaning of contemporary sculptures. The theme of this year’s exhibition is “time”. Although there has already been an exhibition with the same theme, it focused on viewing modern sculpture within the overall timeline of sculpture history. This year’s exhibition wants visitors to look at sculpture not only in its relation to the vertical axis of time, but to also feel “time” itself as it is now, through the exhibited works. It poses the issue of “time” within multifaceted contemporary art that exhaustively pursues diversity. Namely, we artists need to reconsider what “time” is to us, especially nowadays when the way we perceive present-day time and space changes daily due to the proliferation of the internet. This exhibition searches for the meaning of “time” in modern art and sculpture, through the works created by artists who share their own idea of “time.” ■Time in contemporary sculpture Date:May 9, 20, 2019 - June 2, 2019 Artists: OHMAKI Shinji, OMORI Kishi, KAWASHIMA Hiroyuki, KITAYAMA Shoichi, KOZUKA Teruki, SHINODA Taro, SUZUKI Gento, TOMII Motohiro, HAYASHI Takeshi Time:10:00 - 18:00( Fridays open until 20:00 ) Location:Chinretsukan Gallery 1F, 2F (The University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts) 12-8 Ueno Park, Taito-ku, Tokyo Closed:Open all day Admission:Free Photo: The installation view of Shinji Ohmaki

Bright balloons connected to the equipment gently inflate and deflate as if they are breathing, and its lights flicker in a slow constant rhythm, suggesting the subtlety of life. The soft sounds of piano and a daytime playground are reminiscent of the youth’s presence and vitality. Kana Kou @ Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design

Kana Kou has been participating in the group exhibition "Where Am I? -The Art and Design of Signage" at Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design from March 9 - May 19, 2019. (For available works of Kou , please visit artist page of Art Front Gallery: Click here) “Signage” refers to indicators that guide people to their destinations. While we usually don’t tend to consciously think about them, there are various forms of signage around us such as informatory signs, guiding displays, arrows, and pictograms in numerous places from stations, airports, commercial facilities, to museums. On the other hand, as observed from phrases like “the guideposts for life’s journey,” various places and the path by which we arrive them are inextricably linked to the ways of human life. This exhibition focuses on the concept of “Signage=guides” and together with sign designs by graphic designers, introduces contemporary artworks that pursue relationships with place. We consider how people have attempted to understand and communicate various places and spaces, approaching the question of “Where am I?” that unravels amidst such context through both perspectives of art and design. ■Where Am I? -The Art and Design of Signage Date: March 9 - May 19, 2019 Hours: 9:30 - 18:00 Venue: Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design (3-20 Kibamachi, Toyama 930-0806 Japan)

Daikanyanyama T-site is a playground for adults, presenting new life styles through books, movies and music. Our exhibit SLIDER inspired by slide for kids, presents artworks full of playfulness and humor, a key tool for creative thinking. These pieces may make us laugh through their absurd feeling, when the objects in the real life are deformed in unusual way or embodied in ironical way. The total image of the exhibit is therefore to showcase the artists’ humorous esprit to accompany the intellectual space of anjin café with their surreal works. ■special exhibition "SLIDER : A playground for adults" January 21(Mon) - mid-march Place:Anjin café at Daikanyama T-site 2nd Floor, Daikanyama, Shibuya, Tokyo Exhibited Artists: Hironobu Shiozawa, Takuro Tamura, DAISAK, Bunpei Kado, Takanao Kaneko photo: Takuro Tamura "Pigeon On the Needles" h285x320x270mm, mixed media

Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan "Pillars: Project Another Country" in New Zealand.

We are pleased to announce Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan's solo exhibition "Pillars: Project Another Country" in New Zealand. (For available works of Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan, please visit artist page of Art Front Gallery: Click here) Pillars: Project Another Country, 2018, by artists Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan, is a new commission for the North Atrium which expands on the idea of home to encompass migration across oceans, displacement, relocation and settlement. These are essential questions for Auckland and its future, given the fact that 39 per cent of people living in the region were born overseas. This installation, along with their participatory artwork for the Todd Foundation Creative Learning Centre From Pillars to Posts: Project Another Country, explores fundamental ideas about what creates community, what constitutes family, and how homes are fabricated around human needs and relationships. Born in the Philippines, and working between Manila and Brisbane, the Aquilizans have devoted much of their careers to collaborating with communities in site-specific locations across the world, as they inspire conversations that explore the concept of ‘belonging’ and what people envision as ‘home’. ■"Pillars: Project Another Country" Date: Sat 23 Feb 2019 — Sun 16 Feb 2020 Venue: Auckland Art Gallery(Wellesley St E, Auckland, 1010 New Zealand) Curated by Rhana Devenport

Shinji Ohmaki creates the stage art in YOKOHAMA DANCE COLLECTION 2019.

Dance Performance/ Ella Rothschild“Futuristic Space”Shinji Ohmaki creates the stage art. Ella Rothschild is a choreographer, multi-disciplinary artist and dancer. Ella was a sensation in her performances of "JUDAS, CHRIST WITH SOY" which she choreographed and collaborated with Moriyama Mirai at Honmoku Area-2 (2015) and Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse No. 1 (2017). Ella has been dancing with and under the artistic direction of Ohad Naharin. Since 2010, Ella is creating and developing her own movement language in her works and collaborating with artists from various disciplines. Her work integrates dance, visual-art and music. Ella opens our program with a world premiere of "Futuristic Space". The story of "Futuristic Space" takes place several thousand years in the future and reveals an image of a society that survived a big catastrophe. The work investigates the role of each character in the existents and survival of the group. It's revealing the weakness of humanity when thus confronted with nature, integrating the work "Liminal Air-Space-Time" of contemporary artist Ohmaki Shinji .
