Lee Byungchan
Lee Byungchan (born in 1987) is a contemporary artist from Korea. The creature-like works are composed of mass-produced, mass-consumed plastic products. These pieces feature undulating forms inspired by the rhythm of breathing and a fixation on material objects, and through the figures of people wearing the piece, they depict scenes in which plastic appears to parasitize the human body.
He has also created works that express the mass of the city through waves and distorted sound. By visualizing the invisible material of capital, Lee's works --structured through breath and space-- convey images shaped by his experiences with the energy of capital concentrated in emerging urban environments.

“Vanishing Point of the Ants” was conceived in response to the unique context of a window display exhibition. This title interprets the act of consumption as a “vanishing point,” portraying ants—commonly used in Korea as a metaphor for “ordinary people” or “the crowd”—converging toward a space where light and form dissolve into absence.
The scene of "ants" (people) being drawn ever deeper into the product while losing their form, eventually converging into a single point, suggests a process in which distinct individual identities are directed toward a common path, and diverse forms are ultimately unified into one.
Inside the gallery, several concave mirrors are installed on the walls, with a object shaped like a living creature placed before them. This object, which moves ever so slightly as if breathing, reflects distorted, transformed versions of themselves within the mirrors. Surrounding lights accentuate the undulating contours of the warped forms, producing a unique visual effect.
In another exhibition room, a work that involving the act of "wearing" is also exhibited alongside a video piece. In the video, a person wearing the work walks through different parts of the city, periodically checking their reflection in mirrors. This video work, in which the they repeatedly check whether their form remains intact, serves as an exploration of the nature of consumption as it moves toward a vanishing point.

This work explores the circulation of capital concentrated in urban environments. Using materials such as plastic -which contribute to environmental pollution and the destruction of ecosystems- the artist has created an installation that mimics a glowing, moving life form (creature). During his stay, he will also conduct workshops and produce video works based on field research.
