Naka-Boso International Art Festival “ICHIHARA ART×MIX”, Site Inspection on Dec 23 Open call for artwork proposal of “ICHIHARA ART×MIX”. This project is one of projects for Naka-Boso International Art Festival, held in Ichihara city in Chiba prefecture in Spring 2014. The festival is organized by Furamu Kitagawa. ICHIHARA ART×MIX, the name of Naka-Boso International Art Festival, is currently in preparation. Ichihara is a medium-sized city situated in the undulating satoyama landscapes Naka-Boso, in the heart of the Boso peninsula in Chiba prefecture. It is blessed with a mild climate and enjoys various local delicacies - an oasis in the midst of the megalopolis. The festival is staged as a unique international art festival, encompassing nature, food, theatre, performances, music, and sports mixed with art.Various artists will exploit the characteristics of the area and create artworks highlighting the charm of this area. We look forward to receiving invigorating proposals that can contribute to art and cultural development, rural revitalization and the tourist promotion of Ichihara. An exhibition examining his oeuvre has been held at the Nerima Art Museum and Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum(1). Art Front Gallery encountered this important artist while living his secluded life in Hiroshima, as he had done since the end of World War II. We also had the opportunity of showing his work in Tokyo and Zurich in the 1980s, and again in Tokyo in 2011. Art Front Gallery will now hold a new exhibition of various pieces by Gyokuju, including folding screens, ink paintings and the related personal items which have never been exhibited before. This will demonstrate the artist’s unquenchable spirit of inquiry and his original attitudes toward creativity.

“Book/ Architecture” exhibition

11/7~11/18 at Hillside Forum “Book/ Architecture” exhibition by Locus Design Forum will be held as a Japan-China-Korean joint project at Hillside Forum, Tokyo. Installation of books will be exhibited, those were created by 12 groups of invited designers and architects (four groups from each country) with the theme “Book as Cosmos”. Satoshi Uchiumi expresses the various color beauty combining with pointillism-like small dots using oil paints. Also, he focuses onto space representation, he changes work sizes and shapes depending on each exhibiting space, and develops them as great painting installation. In this exhibition, we will be exhibited two large scale works. One of the works is a large painting installation which is dynamically curved in a gallery space. Another installation will start exhibiting from 10th (wed). Please enjoy this overwhelming scale work. Also, we present various small and middle size works showing in gallery spaces as well as another space in upper floor in addition to installation works. Colorful works will be exhibited. Special exhibition: To the Forest Currently, a special exhibition, "To the Forest" is taking place at "Anjin" a cafe space on 2nd floor, in Daikanyama Tsutaya Books. This special exhibition is themed on “animals in a forest” by contemporary young artists who shows two dimensional works as well as three dimensional works. Animals are friendly motifs in art for anyone from children to grown-ups. The works are made of various materials such as iron, FRP, wood, stone, oil-painting and so on. Viewers could enjoy the interesting works in terms of these various features. Motoki Hitomi, “Tears of Clown”, camphor tree, deer horn, acrylic, 270 x 170 x 200mm, 2012 Motoki Hitomi creates three dimensional works which features on animals and a combination of animals and human beings. The artist uses acrylics painted on camphor tree, his works are mostly colorful and humorous look at first impression. However, the animal’s facial expressions have complicated looks just like human beings, and they somehow have a touch of melancholy. His animals that have rich expressions could give imaginative stories and thoughts to viewers. You can see “Tears of Clown” at Anjin, cafe at 2nd floor of Tsutaya Books in Daikanayama T-Site. Artworks at Anjin 10 ? Saeko Kuwana Art Front Gallery is cooperating art coordination at Anjin and there are various works of international and domestic artists exhibited. Currently, a special exhibition “To the Forest” is also exhibited. This special exhibition is related to “Satoyama Art Zoo 2012” in Echigo Tsumari Art Triennale 2012 which Art Front Gallery organizes and conducts. At this time, we would like to introduce a work of Saeko Kuwana who is holding solo exhibition “Editable Region / In the Room” at Art Front Gallery until Sep. 9 (sun). Saeko Kuwana “Reflection Off the Surface-Alice”, ceramic, 260×180×180 mm, 2012 The artist has an interesting approach to “Reflection Off the Surface”. This work is based on the result image when she types in a certain keyword “Alice” on the web search. “Reflection Off the Surface” is developed as a work series in Kuwana’s two dimensional works, these ones are currently exhibited at Art Front Gallery during the exhibition period of “Editable Region / In the Room”. This Alice is fully coved with palladium which is a kind of metal. We can hardly see her face because of vivid flowers covered on. Even though it seems to be a strange look, we could still feel a sense of Alice of the world. Please enjoy both three dimensional work and two dimensional works in each venue. Echigo Tsumari Art Triennale

Until Sep. 17 (Mon) “Echigo Tsumari Art Triennale 2012” will be running until Sep. 17 (Mon) . This art festival is held every 3 years, many people visited this rich green area, Echigo Tsumari and enjoyed seeing many artworks by international artists. Oscar Oiwa and Tadashi Kawamata, who are both related artists of Art Front Gallery, participated this art festival. Even though she studied sculpture in university, but she found interesting deeply in ceramic afterwards. We normally have a domestic image about ceramic, but the artist brings new and original possibilities on the material like creating a large scale ceramic installation. Setouchi Triennale 2013

Kado・Yoshidaselected Kana Yoshida, who is having a solo exhibition at Art Front Gallery next year, and Bunpei Kado, who presented solo exhibitions successfully in this spring at the gallery, were selected from entry call for participating in Setouchi Triennale 2013. Setouchi Triennale 2013 is a contemporary art festival located in various islands of the Seto Inland Sea. It is held in every 3 years, first in 2010 and it attached a huge response from hundreds of thousands of visitors. The name of Setouchi Triennale 2013 is now one of internationally well-known art festival. Setouchi Triennale 2013 is planning to be hold in spring, summer and autumn. Art Triennale running from 29th The 5th Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2012 finally starts Jul. 29 (sun). This art festival is held from Jul. 29 (sun) to Sep. 17 (mon), but Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Museum of Contemporary Art, “Kinare” will be opened as a first excitement on 28th (sat) in the Tokamachi area, Niigata. “Kinare” which is a uniquely designed by architect Hiroshi Hara, is an interactive contemporary art museum that is focusing on environment of the nature and the cultural climate of Echigo-Tsumari. There are various art works exhibited including a large installation by Christian Boltanski in the center of the building and an installation by Gerda Steiner & Jorg Lenzlinger ,who recently hold a solo exhibition at Mito Art Museum, nearby the entrance. Artworks at Anjin 8 ? Kazumasa Noguchi Art Front Gallery is cooperating art coordination at Anjin and there are various works of international and domestic artists exhibited. We recently changed some permanent works there and works of Kazumasa Noguchi, who will be holding solo exhibition “Synthetic Garden” at Art Front Gallery from Jul 13 (fri), are newly exhibited. In recent years, Noguchi presented works using striped pattern. But these days, he explores his new expression in three dimensional works as well as installations. This time, Noguchi’s two dimensional work as well as three dimensional work will be exhibited at Anjin concurrently with the solo exhibition at Art Front Gallery. Special Exhibition: Journey with Hiroshige

4/24- 7/1 Currently, a special exhibition, "Journey with Hiroshige" is taking place at "Anjin" a cafe space on 2nd floor, in Daikanyama Tsutaya Books. This exhibition theme is "travel". Hiroshige Utagawa's "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road" and works of contemporary artists such as Tokuro Sakamoto and Syuji Yamamoto, who were both influenced by traditional Japanese artists, are exhibited. Tokuro Sakamoto is the contemporary Japanese painting artist who focuses on daily life as his main theme. Artists in Edo period like Hiroshige had a great influence on Sakamoto's work specially seen through his emphasis of perspective and picture composition. Art Front Gallery will present solo exhibition "Long Distance View" of Tokuro Sakamoto from Jun. 1 (fri). Kaoru Oda “Stand Still” iron, 230 x 230 x 175mm, 2011 Kaoru Oda creates three- dimensional works which are mostly shapes of house and building using iron as her main material. The artist’s works are themed of the existence of memory and emotion, her works seems to remind us something memorable in old times. Artworks at Anjin 3 - Kimiyo Mishima Art Front Gallery contributes to the art coordination of cafe space at Daikanyama Tsutaya Books, called "Anjin". We would like to introduce the works by Kimiyo Mishima. Kimiyo Mishima, who began her career at '50s, has been creating "printed matter of ceramics", ceramic artworks printed matter such as newspaper and magazine transcribe on. Today's daily mass-consumption of paper and fear of flooding information through it - Mishima expresses critical view on such elements through humorous ceramic work and the attitude can also be seen in the installation of large trashcan waste paper at Naoshima.
