Kana Kou @ Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum

Kana Kou is participating the group exhibition "Garden of Life - Eight Contemporary Artists Venture into Nature" at Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum from 17 October, 2020 - 12 January, 2021. (For available works of Kou, please visit artist page of Art Front Gallery: Click here) ■Garden of Life - Eight Contemporary Artists Venture into Nature Dates: Saturday, 17 October, 2020 - Tuesday, 12 January, 2021 Closed on October 28, November 11, 25, December 9, 23, December 28–January 4 Venue: Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum 5-21-9, Shirokanedai, Minato-ku, Tokyo Kana Kou Born in 1975 in Tokyo She passed away on February 2020 in the middle of preparation for this exhibition Kou’s artwork features motifs of scenery drawn from memories formed during her fieldwork in the mountains and sea. In 2013, she was selected for the VOCA Exhibition at the Ueno Royal Art Museum and received attention for her contribution to the Setouchi Triennale, The Secret of Hanasuwajima. After relocating to Shodoshima, her motifs began to reflect the plants, stones, and other natural materials on the island. She changed her name from Yoshida to Kou in 2016. Kou’s works, which appear to express the sublime, are a sort of toolbox for the artist to (vicariously) experience the grandness of nature like a protagonist or player in a role-playing game. They likewise arouse the viewer to play. That is evident in Cosmic Cactus, an imitation of a desert plant that could be described as a panorama in solid form, and can also be foreseen in her early video work SHAKKI - black and white on the lake. Works that evoke a panoramic sense of nature are displayed alongside these two pieces. Kana Kou The Secret of Hanasuwajima Installation view “Art Setouchi” 2013-19

Shinji Ohmaki @ Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan

中文 Shinji Ohmaki’s solo exhibition “Rustle of Existence” is held at Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan from September 11, 2020. (For available works of Ohmaki, please visit artist page of Art Front Gallery: Click here) Where is the boundary between what is substantial and spiritual, and the self and others? How is one supposed to go about recognizing and pursuing such boundaries? ‘Who am I? What does it mean to be human?’ Catastrophes, man-made disasters, and unexpected events around the world are able to completely change our values about everything around us that we hold right up to the moment before they wreak havoc upon us. Existence can be so uncertain, and it was when I started questioning and thinking about it that I wanted to turn what we can't visually perceive into what we can see, to capture the trajectory of living itself, and to make my work based on the idea of "proof of existence". Due to the influences of COVID-19, we human beings are on the diverging paths to reexamine our relations with others from the aspects of life, thought, nation and society, such as the unsolved energy problems and the pervasive effects of racism from the United States to the world. While pondering over what is others, I would like to review the ground I stand upon again. My search for the invisible existence is to grasp a beam of light in the dark, of which should be passed on ever after. By Shinji OHMAKI ■Shinji Ohmaki Solo Exhibition “Rustle of Existence” Date:11 Sep 2020(Fri)- 22 Nov 2020(Sat) Venue:Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts(No. 1號, Xueyuan Rd, Beitou District, Taipei City, 112) admission free Event: 2020.9.11 PM 3:00 Artist tour PM 5:00 Reception in the venue.

The depictions portray different expressions based on the viewer's perspective, and despite begin contradictorily hollow and absent, this sculpture creates an intimacy with each person that passes in front of it. Under Raqs Media Collective’s direction, it will take the artists and co-travelers on a journey through time and space. The title of Yokohama Triennale 2020 is “AFTERGLOW,” a word chosen by Raqs Media Collective to reference how, in our everyday lives, we unknowingly experience the residues of light sparked at the beginning of our time, as in the case of how the “white noise” on our analog televisions included fragments of cosmic microwave background radiation left over from the cosmic Big Bang. By referring to the Big Bang’s destructive energy that propelled creativity and over time, gave birth to life on this planet, and its radiation that is toxic as well as therapeutic, Raqs Media Collective takes interest in the cycle of destruction/toxicity and recovery/care in the human activities of the contemporary age. Together with the artists, audience, and others, Raqs Media Collective will explore ways to co-exist with toxicity for human sustenance and survival in this world in flux, rather than eliminate it.

Shintaro Tanaka @ Ichihara Lakeside Museum

We are pleased to announce Shintaro Tanaka's solo show “Vertical Landscapes” at Ichihara Lakeside Museum from August 08, 2020. In addition, we will have his solo show in Art Front Gallery from September 11, 2020. ■Shintaro Tanaka “Vertical Landscapes” period : August 08, 2020 to October 18, 2020 venue: Ichihara Lakeside Museum (75-1 Funyu, Ichihara-shi, Chiba 290-0554) An exhibition for Shintaro Tanaka, who worked for sixty years from the time of his dynamic debut at 19 until his death last August at 79. Tanaka was a leader of Japanese contemporary art from the 1960s, attracting attention at the Yomiuri Independent Exhibition and participating in the Neo Dadaism Organizers run by artists such as Genpei Akasegawa and Ushio Shinohara. The minimalistic expressions of his “Dots, Lines, Surfaces” unveiled in 1968 had a strong impact on not only the art world but designers such as Shiro Kuramata and architects, as well. Tanaka represented Japan at international exhibitions such as the Paris Biennale, the 10th Tokyo Biennale: Between Man and Matter, and the Venice Biennale. After a period of illness, he took up new expressive forms with “Vertical Landscapes.” He also undertook many commissions, including those for Bridgestone, Faret Tachikawa, Echigo Tsumari, and the Sapporo Dome. With these projects, he made his work a familiar part of the landscapes of people’s lives. This exhibition explores the evolution of Tanaka’s work with photographs and statements by the artist, revealing how he thought, worked, and lived in each era of his life. Part of his studio in Hitachi is also reconstructed. Experience the delicacy and grandeur of his work.

Nozomi Tanaka @ Meiji Shrine, Tokyo

Nozomi Tanaka will participate in the exhibition "SHIKANSUIYO – ART OF THE ONE HUNDRED YEAR FOREST" at Meiji Shrine Museum from July 10. (For available works of Tanaka, please visit artist page of Art Front Gallery: Click here) ■SHIKANSUIYO – ART OF THE ONE HUNDRED YEAR FOREST Period: July 10 (Fri) – September 27 (Sun), 2020 Venue: Meiji Shrine Museum Online exhibition : Click here(Google Arts & Culture) The literal meaning of the expression Shikansuiyo (紫幹翠葉) is “purple trunk, green leaves”, but it is used to refer to a beautiful scene of nature. From prehistoric times, the Japanese people have found beauty not only in Mt. Fuji and cherry blossom, but in the humble everyday nature of rice fields, wild flowers and birds, too. The artists have prepared their works with particular thought for the shrine and its sacred forests, and with passion, awe and respect for nature and our daily lives. They include works by contemporary artists Takeshi Honda, who paints scenes of the Tono region of Tohoku, and Aki Fueda who specializes in images of animals and birds, as well as Masato Kobayashi, Taro Yamamoto, Hisashi Tenmyouya and Kota Hirakawa among many others. The media chosen for their works are the traditional Japanese forms of folding screens, hanging scrolls, partition screens (paintings) and folding fans. A centerpiece of the show will be folding fan-shaped paintings commissioned from approximately thirty contemporary artists, renowned for both their skill and talent, which will be exhibited along one wall. We hope you will enjoy the many lucid and expressive works on show in the amazing natural surroundings of Meiji Shrine. Exhibiting Artists (in alphabetical order): Mariko Asayama, Takanori Ishizuka, Kaoru Usukubo, Sakae Ozawa, Wataru Ozu, Takahiro Kaino, Yoi Kawakubo, Asami Kiyokawa, Mami Kosemura, Rina Kotani, Takanobu Kobayashi, Ryo Shinagawa, Taro Shinoda, Hiroshi Sugito, Aru Sunaga, Nozomi Tanaka, Noboru Tsubaki, Hisashi Tenmyouya, Kengo Nakamura, Manika Nagare, Chris Namaizawa, Masatoshi Nojo, Taishi Hatayama, Ken Hamaguchi, Kozue Hibino, Bujin Hirai, Kota Hirakawa, Aki Fueda, Misa Funai, Takeshi Honda, Masahiro Masuda, Kumi Machida, Mai Miyake, Yasumasa Morimura, Aki Moriyama, Ai Yamaguchi, Noriko Yamaguchi, Taro Yamamoto, Motoi Yamamoto

The communities and social structures surrounding us are currently in a period of reconnecting the dots and drawing new lines. These lines are drawn from the present, where we are at a significant juncture in time and space. The lines drawn by the artists who have responded to this time will be the future trajectory. Yukihisa Isobe : The Potentiality of Drawing @ Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo

Yukihisa Isobe will participate in the exhibition "The Potentiality of Drawing" at Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo from June 2 (Tue)ー June 21 (Sun), 2020! (For available works of Isobe, please visit artist page of Art Front Gallery: Click here) ■The Potentiality of Drawing Period : 2 June(Tue) - 21 June(Sun), 2020 Venue : Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Exhibition Gallery 3F This exhibition endeavors to re-examine drawing’s potential in a number of different contexts through expression, varied in kind, that employs line as a core medium of exploration. Featured are works that demonstrate contemporary approaches to drawing. 1Words and Visual Image ・・・・・ Henri Matisse, Kyuyo Ishikawa The interplay of words and visual images is among the most essential topics of visual art today. Under the keyword of drawing, this exhibition will reconsider the relationship between words and images in visual expression, and what lies between them. 2 Looking at Space ・・・・・ Shigeo Toya, Keita Mori, Yayoi Kusama, Saburo Aso The work of painters and sculptors begins with an eye to the space around them. What the eye sees finds development in a drawing and, eventually, in a finished work capturing the space. This section considers the meaning of drawing as a core element of the production process and a work’s composition. 3 Visions of Water ・・・・・ Yukihisa Isobe, Yasushi Yamabe Drawing, a means of instantly rendering the imagination visible, has been integral to many artists’ production process. Visions of ceaselessly moving, changing water, seen in the imagination, particularly fascinate artists as a subject of line-based expression. Cai Guo-Qiang @ Ichihara Lakeside Museum, Japan

Cai Guo-Qiang's works are exhibited in Exhibition : Clouds Gathering and Unfolding: An Exhibition of Modern Chinese Art on Paper, at Ichihara Lakeside Museum, Chiba. (For works of Cai, please visit artist page of Art Front Gallery: Click here) ■Clouds Gathering and Unfolding: An Exhibition of Modern Chinese Art on Paper Period: 20th March – 26th July, 2020 Venue: Ichihara Lakeside Museum(75-1 Funyu, Ichihara-shi, Chiba-ken) Ichihara Lakeside Museum will launch an exhibition of seven Chinese contemporary artists with the theme of “paper,” inviting Zheng Yan as guest curator. Paper is one of the four great inventions (compass, gunpowder, paper, printing) in ancient China. The invention of paper promoted the exchanges of literatures, books, science and culture, which contributed to the development of the world’s civilizations. Japan was founded under the influence of Chinese civilization, not only close in distance, but also culturally closely linked. The culture developed through the medium of paper, such as calligraphy and paintings, is influenced by China in every way. The exhibition with the theme “雲巻雲舒 (Yunjuan Yunshu),” which means “clouds gathering around the sun and unfolding in the sky” shows a horizon of the contemporary artistic expression of paper used as a material. The installation artwork of Tadashi Kawamata is exhibited at the window gallery of SHISEIDO THE STORE in Ginza. (For available artworks of Kawamata, please visit the artist page of Art Front Gallery. : Click here) Kawamata tried to create “Hashi construction” using about 24,000 disposable chopsticks. By using materials familiar to Japanese people, he created installation arts on the entrance windows of SHISEIDO THE STORE, connecting the entrance (public place) to the inside (private place). Regarding the work, Kawamata commented that “The installation of countless piece of wood pieces induces communication as a foreign presence at a familiar scenery of Ginza. Moreover, it promotes the emergence of new possibilities while being in the relationship with the variety of forms and changes of the city, and also encompassing the culture and history of the city, as well as the spirit of people's memory. ■ Tadashi Kawamata "Hashi Construction" Period: January 16 (Wed)-March 17 (Tue), 2020 Venue: SHISEIDO THE STORE 1F (7-8-10 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo)
