Takashi Kuribayashi "GENKI-RO OHYA No.2"

Currently on view is the Genki-Ro Ohya, a part of Under Museum Challenge 01 GATE (UMC01_GATE) , a project developed in the site of quarry pit of Ohya stone. Ohya stone is scattered around the area Ohya in Utsunomiya City, and this specific stone has been nominated as Japan legacy. Following the Genki-ro, his previous work exhibited in the Nizayama Forest Art Museum last year, this present Genki-ro allows visitors to experience Sauna, thus inducing five senses of human body. Kurhibayashi is scheduled to participate in Documenta 15 at Kassel in the center of Germany in June 2022. Please pay attention to Kurhibayashi’s artistic activity! ■GENKI-RO OHYA No.2 under museum challenge 01 gate. 30, Oct.2021 ~ 23.Nov.2021(sat/sun only) open 9;30 ~ 16;00. Utsunomiy-city Ohya-town muroyama www.under-museum-project.com underground x Genki-ro experience Artist Kuribayashi has frequently visited Fukushima since the Great Disaster 2011, where he received himself a lot of energy from the local people. He was surprised to know the reality, which was different from what he had learned indirectly from his acquaintance. He created a Genki-Ro or steam sauna, with its herb steam in a construction in the form of an atomic reactor after numerous researches of the nuclear issues in the 10th year since the earthquake. He questions the negative problems into positive solutions inquiring if the people entering into this Genki-ro will come out in better bodily condition. They boil water in a huge pan creating the steam of herb. Visitors can enter inside the artwork, feeling as if they are like “control rod” of nuclear reactor. Just like a sauna, they get refreshed, losing themselves in the steam and mist of messy atmosphere to feel the essence of the work with five senses. Through artwork of Kuribayashi, visitors can feel the grandiose scale of the basement space, feel the cooling water, and appreciate the charm of the space. The present Genki-ro is totally different from the previous version of the Genki-ro, if the system remains the same. Please discover on the spot. Just seeing is believing! 参考:《The Reactor》2019、Stained glass (For available works of Kurubayashi, please visit artist page of Art Front Gallery: Click here)

Yuma Tomiyasu's solo exhibition is held at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa from Oct. 30th (Sat.) 2021. What Tomiyasu describes through such non-scientific things is a consciousness that emerges beyond body tissue, manifesting when the spirit of artist and spectator infiltrate each other. Her installation in the shape of a room gives the viewer a sense of a real, albeit invisible presence. The gallery space becomes a real dwelling place inhabited by the phantoms of those absent; projecting the presence of matter like a dream potentially perceived via a special, affinitive relationship between artist and spectator, instead of a hostile one mediated by the work. Teppei Kaneuji @ Hermitage Museum, in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Teppei Kaneuji is participating the ongoing exhibition “Glasstress” at Hermitage Museum in Russia. For your reference, glass works “Smoke and fog (Murano)#1-5” at our exhibition Teppei Kaneuji: S.F.(Smoke and Fog) at Art Front Gallery through October 3th were created at a studio in Murano, Venice in Italy. These artworks are composed of blown glass and transparent objects found in every life. They were produced in two sets, one kept by the artist in Japan while the other in the Italian studio. This time, a synchronized exhibit was realized for the first time: one set #1-5 on view in Art Front Gallery while the other at renowned museum of Hermitage in Russia at the same time. Title of the exhibition:Glasstress. Window to the Future Date: 9.11-10.31, 2021 Venue:The State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia The latest edition of Glasstress showcases artworks made with glass by contemporary artists. In 2015 the exhibition Glasstress Gotika, was organized by the State Hermitage and held in the Palazzo Franchetti in Venice during the Venice Biennale. The display included items from the museum's collection – armor, religious objects, and other works of applied art made in the Gothic and Neo-Gothic styles – that were presented in a dialogue with pieces created by contemporary artists in Murano. Keneuji participated in both exhibit of 2015 at Palazzo Franchetti and in 2021 at Hermitage. Exhibit in 2021 is mixing it up, bringing Murano to Saint Petersburg with the work of over fifty contemporary artists. Last time the past was the inspiration, this time it's the future. Glasstress. Window to the Future is one of the museum’s largest exhibitions of contemporary art, occupying more than ten halls, including the monumental expanse of the Grand Enfilade and White Hall, as well as the intimate spaces of the Courtyard Gallery and the Red Hall in the General Staff Building. It features more than 50 works created in glass by contemporary artists such as Ai Weiwei, Tony Cragg, Jimmie Durham, Jan Fabre, Ilya & Emilia Kabakov, Vik Muniz, Mimmo Paladino, Jaume Plensa, Wael Shawky, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Kaneuji Teppei, Kaneuji attracting much attention, we appreciate your interest in this international exhibition. Christo and Jeanne-Claude L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped, Paris, 1961-2021

Christo and Jeanne-Claude ”L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped, Paris, 1961-2021” L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped (Project for Paris, Place de l'Étoile - Charles de Gaulle), a temporary work of art, will be on view for 16 days, from Saturday, September 18 to Sunday, October 3, 2021. Per Christo's wishes, the project has been completed by his team in partnership with the Centre des Monuments Nationaux (CMN), the government institution that manages the Arc de Triomphe. Christo and Jeanne-Claude long worked for the project of wrapping L’arc de Triomphe, symbol of Paris or even of Western Europe. In 1961, three years after they met in Paris, Christo rented a small room near the Arc de Triomphe and had been attracted by the monument ever since. Then he made a photomontage of the Arc de Triomphe wrapped and collage later. After his beloved wife’s passing away in 2009, he continued the project scheduled in the spring 2020, which was postponed to 2021 because of corona pandemic. Christo himself died at the age of 84 in May, 2020, so he could not see with his own eyes the wrapped Arc. The Arc de Triomphe is wrapped in 25,000 square meters of recyclable polypropylene fabric in silvery blue, and with 3,000 meters of red rope. The long project since 1961 was finally realized. Oscar Oiwa: Let’s go on a life trip! Exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo

The exhibit “MOT Collection: Journals” will be on view from July 17 to October 17, including large drawings and silk screen by Oscar Oiwa. As entitled, this group show is a kind of anthology composed of pieces created in the daily lives under corona pandemic as well as with the background of Olympic games. Among others, the special exhibit of Oscar reflects the “life trip” of the artist, as he admits, who observes and represents the characteristic of different scenery of respective societies. We introduce the main images as follows. Zeus, God of Olympia landing at Tokyo “Zeus, God of Olympia” 2019 marker pen and charcoal on paper, h300 x w670cm (3 pieces in total) ©OSCAR OIWA This series was first exhibited in the Japan Cultural Institute in Paris in fall 2020 (“Transphere” #6Curator: Aomi Okabe). Memories of the cities in Rio, Tokyo and Paris are collaged, to generate the face image of Zeus, God of Ancient Olympia when installed vertically. The artist finds the similar diligence in athlete and himself targeting the goals as below. I have never had the ambition of becoming an Olympic champion, but just like these atheletes, I strive every day to surpass myself in my work. This parallel has inspired me to create a new series that merges this daily struggle with my travelling life. Three Olympic cities to which I am personally linked – Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo and Paris – are at the heart of these paintings, in which I have hidden some of my memories. (fromThe Japan Foundation “Contemporary Artist Exhibition Report Transphere 2016-2020”, 2021, p.222) detail “Quarantine Series” all the silk screen works revealed In 2020, corona pandemic began to spread throughout the world including New York where Oscar lives and works. Main spots such as Times Square become vacant with no people or the artist himself is confined within his apartment, unable to commute his atelier in the suburb. Nevertheless, Oscar tried what he could do in this inconvenience using large digital tablet to produce “Quarantine Drawing Series”. This series was printed in Japan and was exhibited in Art Front Gallery. This print series is now on view at MOT for the first time. Please enjoy the imaginary trip by the artist from Shanghai, Osaka, Japan at the period of before-war, and New York, to find the details of daily life, which might have been overlooked in the world without pandemic. “A Sick Country” 2020, 56.5 x 76.5cm, silk screen on BFK rive paper This piece was conceived more than one year ago, when the vaccine was not realized at all. The imagination of the artist has become true. “Kitchen of the Future” 2020, 56.5 x 76.5cm, silk screen on BFK rive paper This image was based on Oscar’s own kitchen, to generate the future concept with animals. In addition to these pieces exhibited in the museum, Art Front Gallery can also offer the painting for the “Quarantine Series”, oil on canvas, created in the same period. When the city of NY was locked down, the shops were equipped with veneer wood to prevent from looting. The painting are themselves outcome of the registration of this specific time while they are proof of artist’s keeping on creating on the basis of his own memory. Store front at New York with veneer board, (©OSCAR OIWA, from video clip) 《shop (market)》2020 oil on canvas, veneer 58 x 76cm 《shop (China town)》2020 oil on canvas, veneer, 50 x 61cm ■MOT Collection: Journals Special exhibit: Mark Manders, Storage and Display Sat. 17 Jul - Sun. 17 Oct, 2021 at Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo On the first floor, under the title, “Journals,” artworks created daily against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic and disastrous events that have transformed our lives, the Olympics held upon a global scale, and the ordinary day-to-day, are presented in the form of an anthology comprising a wide variety of artists. Highlights of the exhibition include Chim↑Pom’s May, 2020, Tokyo, as well as new print works “Quarantine Series” and Zeus: the God of Olympia by Oscar OIWA (all on special exhibit). Such are featured on this occasion along with a selection of around 70 works by artists such as NINAGAWA Mika, TAKEUCHI Kota, MIYAKE Saori, and KAWARA On, all serving to illuminate the society and daily life in which we live.

Venue The Ueno Royal Museum (1-2 Ueno Park, Taito-ku, Tokyo 110-0007) Masatake Kozaki《MUGEN-Tree of Life-》2020 240.0×170.0 hemp paper, metal leaves, mineral pigments, acrylic on wooden panel Under the corona situation, Kozaki kept his creative activity at home feeling the air which move the world to a different border from the present one. He entitled his new work as MUGEN meaning “ephemeral illusion”. While he was using a composition of Rakuchu Rakugai city scape or hybrid arrangement of animals and plants, in this work he used the tall format with botanical landmark in the center where “everything is in ascension against gravity with mixture or disorder of all the animals, plants, humans or even technology in chaotic world” thus proposing a universal dream do be depicted in the current society to put stress on the same dream shared by the all the people. Naoto Sunohara《Airy Plue》 2018 200.0×600.0 Japanese paper, mineral pigments, seiboku (bluish ink) on wooden panel Sunohara was exhibited in last March in the exhibit VOCA selection throughout Japan and attract much attention nowadays. His professor Natsunosuke Mise once stated about the artwork of Sunohara as Sunohara creates paintings on the basis of Shasei with surrounding objects as motifs. His original experience can be traced in climbing up mountains in his hometown Shinshu (Nagano) area. Imagined scenery of older days acquired only through time difference between the present and past has been mixed in complex layers with the real landscape of Yamagata where he lives and works. Such process contributes to generate an almost abstract painting of “mountain itself”, where his breath is overlapped with the picture plane. We hope that you will enjoy their works together with other artist’s in the venue.

It will also include related works by the artist from “SHOW-CASE project No. 4 Tatsuo Kawaguchi Gaze Breathing via Branchial Respiration,” an exhibition which was directly impacted by the onset of the pandemic last year. Yukihisa Isobe @ Centre Pompidou – Metz “Aerodream-Architecture, Design and Inflatable Structures 1950-2020”

Yukihisa Isobe is participating in the exhibition “Aerodream-Architecture, Design and Inflatable Structures 1950-2020” at Centre Pompidou – Metz, France. This exhibition features on the development of pneumatic structure and its derivatives, newly introduced as a material in the architecture as well as design in post-war period. It includes maquettes, drawings and photos. After the petrol crisis at the end of the 1970’s which would sound the death knell of an ideology of the use of plastics, the inflatable progressively faded away, the post-modern current juxtaposing the image of this industrial product. But since about ten years, with the appearance of more ecological new technologies, the inflatable has regained its reputation and represents an alternative for a number of architects such as Arata Isozaki or Kengo Kuma among others. Yukihisa Isobe, as early as in the sixties, tackled with this innovative pneumatic structure, and created to a huge dome for Earth Day in 1970. He had installed in New York and succeeded in acquire the green card for to get a position in Department of the Park in New York City. In this time of ecology, he created a poster for Earth Day, with the background of young Americans’ anti-war for Vietnam, AIDS or drug problems. In the exhibit of Aerodream, the poster and the video are on view from Yukihisa Isobe. The exhibit will travel to Cite de l’Architecture et Patrimoine in Paris this November after the session at Centre Pompidou Metz.

Kana Kou @ ROPPONGI TSUTAYA BOOKS, Tokyo

We are pleased to announce the solo show of Kana Kou (Yoshida Kana) at ROPPONGI TSUTAYA BOOKS in Tokyo. (For available works of Kou, please visit artist page of Art Front Gallery: Click here) Kou Kana has been working based on her actual experience in the nature, climbing mountains and diving into the ocean. Her works are not merely a result of her visual experience, but memory, including the emotion she has felt through her experience, anxiety or fear, which can turn the place special for the artist. The artist called these kind of experience a "Beautiful Limit", and which also were adopted as titles of her works. Her works had a large impact in group exhibition recently held at Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum (Oct. 2020 to Jan. 2021). In the new solo exhibition of the artist "100 miles climbing" beginning from March 22, is held in two sets, showing some of her major works which have not be shown recently in public. ■ Kou Kana "100 miles climbing" Period First Term: March 22 (Mon) to April 25 (Sun), 2021 Second Term: April 27 (Tue) - May 30 (Sun), 2021 Place: ROPPONGI TSUTAYA BOOKS 2F BOOK GALLERY (6-11-1 Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo 106-0032 ROPPONGI HILLS Roppongi Keyakizaka Street) 【 Yoshida Kana / Kou Kana Catalogue 】 From paintings to installations, we selected more than 130 major works out of over 300 works by the artist from the early period to 2020. Introduced in chronological order to show the transformation of the artist's interest and expression. The first catalogue of the artist is scheduled to be published in April 2021. 【100 miles climbing “you are here to enjoy yourself “】 The first half of the 100 miles climbing exhibition show mainly works from the "For the Love of Beer" series which is based on the artist's original plot about the main character Mr. Beer climbing a cliff while at the same time enjoying the process to reach the goal. The climber is doing the vertical mountain climbing seven days, while only drinking water from cactus and therefore dreaming of having a beer at the final goal. The landscape is an imaginative scenery based on the artist's own mountain climbing. The title of the first set of the exhibition “ you are here to enjoy yourself ” is a message of the artist. Overcoming the obstacle day by day, step by step to have the treat on the last day. This might be close to our recent difficult situation. [100 miles climbing “Beautiful Limit"] The term “Beautiful Limit” is made by the artist meaning the state in which one's limitation and consciousness expands due to panic, entailed by fear or surprise, at the moment encountering nature beyond recognition. The artist's whole working process was to expand this Beautiful Limit. Her direct experience of the nature was always there before the works, and the works were the result of reconstruction based on the experience. The second half of the exhibition introduces works with impressive green landscapes. While the first half is about the struggle of human kind in the large nature, the second will be about the harmony with the nature. We are able to feel the artist's view toward the richness of the nature.

Kuno has created an installation of “skytree” symbolizes proliferating elements of newly appearing city, which synchronizes the increase of electric wire. Please visit the exhibit collecting about 150 artworks through April 18. ■Paintings of Electrical Wire 2021.02.28(Sun.)~ 2021.04.18(Sun.) Teppei Kaneuji “Eraser Mountain” in Tokyo

Teppei Kaneuji is participating the performance, “Eraser Mountain” as a scenographer this time. (For available works by Kaneuji, please visit the artist page on Art Front Gallery webpage :Click here) Theater freed from the "human yardstick," updating our vision of the world space, and language appear in unknown forms... Through theater, an activity for people, is it possible to bring forth a world in which human beings, things, and the environment surrounding them all exist in a flat relationship? The city of Rikuzentakata in Iwate Prefecture incurred immense devastation in the Great East Japan Earthquake. Earthwork construction aimed at raising the level of the ground to prevent damage from tsunami artificially altered the landscape with an amazing rapidity. Toshiki Okada's idea for creating a work that questioned the ""human yardstick"" sprang from a firsthand look at this sight. Eraser Mountain, the resulting play, was prepared in collaboration with the artist Teppei Kaneuji, who continues to expand the domain of sculpture. In space cluttered with countless items, actors build a new relationship with objects, and audiences come to see the world with a new vision. About one year has passed since the first performance of Eraser Mountain, which debuted in Kyoto in October 2019. The project, which began with theaters, has since been expanded to include various other types of space. Eraser Forest put actors into museums, which are normally space for art objects, and performance with things took another step forward. These achievements were brought into the living space of the actors in Eraser Field, which altered ways of seeing everyday scenes. Eraser Mountain has returned to the theater, and all are waiting to see what sort of landscape it will present. This is the latest edition in the Eraser series. ■“Eraser Mountain is watching” (Live Streaming) Schedule 2/13(Sat) 17:00 2/14(Sun) 14:00Archive period:23:59 the next day of each streaming day Surtitle:English/Japanese Ticket Surtitle with English / Surtitle withJapanese / No surtitle ¥1,800 (All denomination) Reservation LAWSON TICKET LIVE STREAMING https://l-tike.com/play/mevent/?mid=563763 ■chelfitsch & Teppei Kaneuji “Eraser Mountain” in Tokyo Schedule 2/11(Tue) 17:00 2/12(Fri) 12:00/17:00 2/13(Sat) 12:00★/17:00☆ 2/14(Sun) 14:00☆ ★Performances with low viewing-manner hurdles ☆Live streaming Venue OWLSPOT Theatre
