Bunpei Kado and Iku Harada will participate in ART SG in January 2023

After a long wait, ART SG will finally open as a Singapore art fair in January 2023 after the Corona disaster. Art Front Gallery has been participating in Art Stage Singapore since 2013, introducing the gallery's artists to Asian clients. Since Taipei Dangdai, Art Front Gallery has been building a relationship with Magnus Renfrew, the director of ART SG, through fairs and online events, and is looking to bring a new dimension to ART SG. ART SG, which will be held from January next year, will feature over 150 galleries, making it the largest art fair in the Asia-Pacific region in the past 10 years. It will be held at the iconic Marina Bay Sands and Convention Center, Singapore's most iconic venue, and will include collectors from surrounding countries, making it the perfect event to kick off the year 2023. Iku Harada and Bunpei Kado have been selected to exhibit in ART SG: Both artists have established themselves in Singapore. Cai Guo-Qiang at Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo

Cai Guo-Qiang's works are exhibited in the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo's collection exhibition. ■MOT Collection: Rewinding the Collection 2nd Thu. 03 Nov, 2022 - Sun. 19 Feb, 2023 Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo https://www.mot-art-museum.jp/en/exhibitions/mot-collection-221103/ photo: CAI Guo-Qiang "Fetus Movement Ⅱ: Project for Extraterrestrials No.9" 1991 Project for Extraterrestrials No.8, Reviving The Ancient Signal Towers and "Project for Extraterrestrials No.9, Fetus Movement II" have been both presented in Cai's 1991 one-man show as future projects. In these works, gunpowder was burned upon the paper to create traces of fire, and explanations about each project was written in india ink over these traces. The title of the series, "Project for Extraterrestrials," indicates that these works have been conceived as messages for extraterrestrials and are to be realized in huge, cosmic scales. At the same time, in choosing the materials of gunpowder and india ink, both invented in ancient China, the artist asserts his own origin. "Reviving The Ancient Signal Towers" is a project that involves lighting fire upon the signal towers, the communication system of ancient China, and confirming the lighted fire from satellites, the communication system to embody the latest technologies. In "Fetus Movement II", the artist is to set gunpowder in a circle and, sitting at its center, ignite it. Machines are to record the changes in the artist's pulse and the tremors in the ground that would be caused by the explosion. The light produced in either of these works is oniy momentary, but the signals would travel away from the earth infinitely. In these works, the artist cleverly combines Eastern elements and advanced technologies. The project "Fetus Movement II" was actually carried out at "the Kassel International Art Exhibition" in 1992.rnrnrn

In this exhibition, she depicts "light approaching" and "enveloping light" that seems to melt the landscape, expressing the various senses of "light" that exist in the landscape. We asked her to talk about her new works, including her thoughts on these works and awareness of new expressions beyond them.

Gallery's Picks for the Month:Collections of Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2022-Kabakov and Oscar Oiwa

The current "Collections of Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2022" features the best selection of works by artists who have participated in the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale. The first exhibition was held in 2000, when Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale actively invited artists from abroad. Ilya and Emilia Kabakov's "Rice Paddies," which symbolizes the energy of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial, is a work that is literally rooted in the earth and continues to connect visitors to the land of Tsumari. The work exhibited in this collection "Ship of Tolerance", aims to create a world without conflict by encouraging interaction among people through art. The background of its creation and the artist's thoughts will be presented. Another work by Oscar Oiwa, who also participated in the first exhibition, "The Beautiful Thatched House," is also based on the motif of life in Tsumari and is a vivid green landscape painting captured from an outside perspective. It will be introduced along with Oscar's recent activities in Setouchi Triennale.

Takanao KANEKO : " NIJIGEN-HA” (literally “the two-dimensions current)"

Takanao KANEKO is participating the group exhibition " NIJIGEN-HA”.(For available works of Kaneko, please visit artist page of Art Front Gallery: Click here) The Executive Committee has organized the NIJIGEN-HA Exhibition to be held at two venues in Tokyo from Wednesday August 24, 2022 and running for around one month. Many people in Japan are still unaware that in recent years, some Japanese artists have leveraged the opportunity created by social media booms to gain massive popularity across East Asia. In this exhibition, we are dubbing them and the surrounding art scene they have created as " NIJIGEN-HA” (literally “the two-dimensions current)" for the first time. Through more than 100 artworks from about 30 artists, we seek to understand one of the most cutting-edge identities within Japanese art and the common emotions and senses of the young people across Asia. Starting around 2020, the term "Nijigen" became popularized in the East Asian art market centered on China. The word "Nijigen" also connotes the popular awareness of Japaneseness in a general sense, including video games, idol culture, kawaii values, young generation culture and fashion. Works by Japanese artists with a “Nijigen” world view have found favor with young collectors around Asia. Yet these artists remain relatively unknown in Japan, and there has no systematic platform to discuss them until now. Kutsuna Miwa, who has been paying close attention to the contemporary art scene in East Asia and studying the contemporary art history for the past two decades, is now calling attention to and analyzing the must-know transitions of contemporary art in Japan. Through this exhibition, she guides us toward focusing on the new artists rooted in the current popular culture and the surrounding phenomena. Takako Azami 《Trees nagatoro 1》, new trial

Takako Azami "Trees nagatoro 1" photo by Shintaro Miyawaki Takako Azami exhibited in Higashiyama Kaii Setouchi Art Museum in 2019. She was selected as an artist in relation to Setouchi for the current exhibit “The Atmosphere of Setouchi – An Art Perspective” at The Kagawa Museum. Asked to create something related to Setouchi, Azami focused on the greenish schist which unites Chichibu where her atelier is located and Setouchi. She sketched in Nagatoro area known for pile of rocks. “Recalling that Nagatoro is a part of the Sanba River metamorphic belt, I strolled about the pile of rocks to find a nice viewing spot for the landscape, where I drew the trees on the cliff. I viewed the stream of Arakawa River along with pile of rocks across the trees, but finally I depicted mainly the trees on the cliff with the reflection of light from the water surface more than several dozen meters below myself, which I discovered under such special situation. However, I could not approach, as I usually do, to the trees for its cliff, which was the difficulty.” The artwork shows the angle or style of depiction, which is different from those the artist represents with the trees of her own garden. Also, “Transform 2108” exhibited in Art Front Gallery can also be found at the venue. The exhibition is through September 4, synchronizing with Setouchi Triennale (Summer). Yoshitaka Nanjo : new installation

Installation view of ”The Atmosphere of Setouchi– An Art Perspective” photo by Shintaro Miyawaki Current exhibit “The Atmosphere of Setouchi – An Art Perspective” at The Kagawa Museum shows the new work of Yoshitaka Nanjo. He was born in Sakaide, Kagawa Prefecture, and participated in Setouchi Triennale 2019. This year at its Spring Session, he was selected to exhibit in Shamijima. He installed old furniture or lamp together with changing video projection on the landscape of Five Islands including Yoshima, making the visitors experience the historical movement of waterflow into Inland Sea. Although this installation is not visible now, you can enjoy his new installation at the museum. According to the artist, it is the following development of the work in Shamijima. "Fugitive dust with sea breeze covered the dresser and other daily objects left in the room. The mirrors, among others, seemed to have cherished number of longstanding memories together with sounds of surf. In this installation, I borrowed the fishing devices from in the collection of Seto Inland Sea Museum of History and Folklore, creating an installation. It is composed of new five works combining the mirrors or wall clocks with video and of works projected on the fishing net or on the lamps, " he says. Nanjo sheds light on the cultural resources left in the locals, showcasing the notion of time with his unique video or lighting, and thus leading us to re-discover our daily life and history. The exhibition is through September 4, synchronizing with Setouchi Triennale (Summer). We wish your visit for both!

New Work of mounir fatmi at Setouchi Triennale "Based on True Story"

A new work of Mounir fatmi was created for current Setouchi Triennale. Following his previous installation of Awashima island, the artist had a opportunity of using an abandoned clinic in Uno port quartier. A series of videos “Architecture Now!” together with the series of 16 photographs The Rest made in 2004 are installed. The videos have an motif of demolition of an apartment in Paris dated 1930 where people from many countries lived after WWI. This time, the artist created the work using remote communication, and questions about the true meaning of “habitat” , a global issue especially featured in present day. This installation strongly reflects the artist’s attitude toward the social situation. Fatmi, born in Morocco, is based in France while keeping his eyes from the periphery. He keeps on working on many issues of religion, education or politics, realizing various art of installation, paintings, photos and videos among others. He once had the historical approach toward the medical issues, which was exhibited in Art Front gallery last year.

Setouchi Triennale has just inaugurated (April 14-May 18) , and the artist Goro Murayama created on the spot his new works in Hamaguchi House in Ogi Island, Kagawa. He once stated that the island has its own time, defined by the topology and the moving of the sun over the island as well as by the regular schedule of ferry between the main land. “This gentle but strict time was the starting point of my works. I tried to create a place to synchronize with the old architecture as space, the residency of myself, and the bodily entity of the plants / seashells fostered in their own growth which structure the specific time itself as lifelog.” The repetition of the organic pattern on the wall of the second floor, the inlayed motifs of the plants on the old wood, once used for the Tokono-ma” or wall-niche in this house, will invite the viewer to experience the whole world with generation and decomposition, together with its time. We appreciate your kind visit!

The man once dreamt of going to the moon by artillery. It may look absurd from present day, but this fantastic episode depicted in “From the Earth to the Moon” by Jules Verne with taste of imaginary visions going beyond the borders with llimited technology, is becoming true stories. Today, with the progress of science technology and its research, even ordinary people can go to the space. —Bunpei Kado Bunpei Kado has long developed and explored the idea of habitat (living environment) in his participation of group exhibition as Okamoto Taro Award, international art festivals such as Setouchi Triennale and Ichihara Art×Mix together with his solo shows. This time he assembled his “houses” created so far, realizing fantastic science as his original sources. Here he questions the issues of “base” (both as earth as well as concept) which will be doubted some day in the future, showcasing the “counterpart” works to solve the problems in his own way. The exhibit will be a chronical of his career, while it also shows the latest elements added to the “imaginary space relocation” plan, inspired with the current streams of private space development. We appreciate your kind visit to witness the idea of Kado leading the history of technology. —Art Front Gallery

Teppei Kaneuji @ Mori Art Museum, Tokyo

Teppei Kaneuji is participating in the exhibition "MAM Collection 014: Gravity and Inversion, Microcosmos and Macrocosmos" at Mori Art Museum, Tokyo. (For available works of Kaneuji, please visit artist page of Art Front Gallery: Click here) ■MAM Collection 014: Gravity and Inversion, Microcosmos and Macrocosmos - Tateishi Tiger, Yin Xiuzhen, Iwasaki Takahiro and Kaneuji Teppei Period: 2022.2.18 [Fri] - 5.29 [Sun] Venue: Mori Art Museum (53F, Roppongi Hills Mori Tower) Participating Artists: Tateishi Tiger Yin Xiuzhen Iwasaki Takahiro Kaneuji Teppei There can be no doubt that recent scientific advances in knowledge and technology are transforming our spatial awareness and view of the world. News reports tell how time and space in the universe, starting with the gravity masses that are black holes, are not fixed as they are on earth; how there may be more than one universe; and how life may exist on the many planets discovered outside our own solar system. This also means that from a cosmic point of view, the things we refer to using the terms micro and macro are so only from a viewpoint that complements our own scale. And perhaps the proliferation of online meetings due to the pandemic has also altered our perceptions around “being in the same space, here and now.” This exhibition will present a group of works that express perspectives freed from these earthly constraints of gravity, time, space and scale. Tateishi Tiger’s FUJI HI-WAY, in which a highway scene with gravity seemingly turned on its head appears with Mt. Fuji and a piece of outer space in the background, and Micro Fuji, with its mix of micro and macrocosmic worlds; Iwasaki Takahiro’s Reflection Model featuring the Kinkakuji Temple flipped in the direction of gravity and made vertically symmetrical; Kaneuji Teppei’s mysterious Tower bursting with a plethora of objects; and Yin Xiuzhen’s Portable City - Tokyo, a mini-version of the capital in a suitcase, all seem to demonstrate that our world is not horizontal but composed of multiple different scales and dimensions, and that the microcosmic and macrocosmic are connected.

Oscar Oiwa @ The National Museum of Art, Osaka.

Oscar Oiwa is participating the exhibition "Range of the Senses: What It Means to “Experience” Today" at The National Museum of Art, Osaka. (For available works of Oiwa, please visit artist page of Art Front Gallery: Click here) ■Special Exhibition Range of the Senses: What It Means to “Experience” Today Period: February 8–May 22, 2022 Venue: The National Museum of Art, Osaka. (4-2-55 Nakanoshima, Kita-ku, Osaka, 530-0005, Japan) This special exhibition showcases seven artists who have developed experimental practices in the field of contemporary art based on unique perspectives and techniques. Today, the human race is confronted with a host of difficult problems on a global scale. Our environment has undergone sudden violent changes, exerting a huge influence on the mental state of everyone in the world. Moreover, the emergence of COVID‑19 has exacerbated societal strife. Our way of living has changed dramatically, and as many of the activities in our daily life have been restricted, we have begun question what it means to experience something new. Under these circumstances, contemporary art has attracted attention as a means of providing people with myriad experiences. Similarly, the works by the seven artists in this exhibition provide us with experiences of different qualities. These range from physical experiences (in works by Takehiro Iikawa and Hajime Imamura), which are accompanied by full-body sensations, to those that trigger physiological reactions beneath the eyelids (Yasuko Iba, Kodai Nakahara, and Kohei Nawa), and thought-provoking experiences that evoke memories and stoke the imagination (Oscar Oiwa and Yasuhiro Fujiwara). Each of the works suggests diverse experiences. That being the case, you might say that the notion of art as a visual medium has already become a thing of the past. Although sight may still reign as the predominant human sense, contemporary art has become a panesthetic entity that encompasses the entire body. Following an age in which art functioned as a challenge to the human race by attempting to expand the limited potential of sight, we might now see art as an act of cultivating images of a new world that we encounter through the operation of every sensory organ. This might be described as expanding the range of the senses. Based on the conditions surrounding today’s art and human senses, this exhibition focuses on the current state of these artists’ radical experiments. These efforts are a reflection of the real world and the things that are occurring in it at this very moment. The gallery spaces might be likened to “sensory laboratories.” And the viewer might perceive the works as both complete expressions and variable entities that are in the process of changing into something else. Through this exhibition, it is our hope that as many viewers as possible will have an opportunity to experience the artists’ unique works and the messages that they contain in a setting in which a variety of senses are intertwined. Artists Takehiro Iikawa, Yasuko Iba, Hajime Imamura, Oscar Oiwa, Kodai Nakahara, Kohei Nawa, Yasuhiro Fujiwara

Photo: Ken Kato
