Hiraku Suzuki
Born 1978. After obtaining his MFA at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, he has undertaken residencies in Sydney, Sao Paulo, London, New York, and Berlin. Focusing on the interconnection between drawing and writing or picture and language, his practice encompasses a large variety of media, including two-dimensional works, installations, murals, video, performance, and sculpture. His art explores the potentiality of drawing in an expanded notion through the act of excavating the lines in time and space.
Recent solo exhibitions have included those held at The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma (Gunma, 2023), Aomori Contemporary Art Center (Aomori, 2015), Daiwa Foundation (London, 2013), Wimbledon Space (London,2011), Galerie du Jour (Paris, 2010). Group exhibitions include "MOT Annual 2019 Echo after Echo" The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (Tokyo, 2019), "Very Addictive" Yinchuan Museum of Contemporary Art (China, 2016), "Think Tank Lab Triennale" Wroclaw Architectural Museum (Poland, 2015), "Vancouver Biennale" (Canada, 2014), "Nissan Art Award" Bank Art (Kanagawa, 2013), "Son et Lumière, et sagesse profonde" 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (Ishikawa,2013), and "Roppongi Crossing" Mori Art Museum (Tokyo, 2010). He has collaborated with musicians and poets, and has carried out many large-scale public projects. Since 2016 he has been organizing "Drawing Tube", an international platform for alternative drawing research and practices. Published books of his works include "SILVER MARKER―Drawing as Excavating" (HeHe, 2020) and "GENGA" (Kawade Shobo Shinsha, 2010).
