Shinji Ohamki and his new direction

Ohmaki’s large scale installation at Aichi Triennale has been much discussed about since its opening in August. Especially the series Echoes Infinity, where the colorful flowers were depicted on the floor, showcase the physical energy of the artist himself. Visitors so far were guided to walk on the deck surveying the work unrolling beneath and could feel the moment of infinity with the pigments stay as the artist intended.
From October 11, it will be a stage where visitors step into the work covering 450㎡. Ohmaki once stated that he wanted to prepare a stage for ordinary people where the ordinary life may be transformed into extraordinary. Certainly his many challenges have generated a theatrical impression with much emotional effect.

In Aichi Triennale, another piece Called Gravity and Grace installed at Toyohashi Arts Theatre PLAT presents a symphony of light and materials. The light is now 70,000 Lumen or unit of luminous flux which may create a daylight even in the night.

The metal as material interests Ohmaki recently and the latest work is on view at Art Front Gallery. In this occasion, the artist tries to explore the “Liminal” or border of the front and backside, minimizing the border like a transparent cloth swinging betraying its backside. His longstanding search for the border between certain and uncertain has been major theme, and this attitude can be seen throughout his artistic career. The new publication Shinji Ohmaki covers all the major works so far, and is a good reference for understanding Ohmaki’s art with such a wide range of representation.
