Masterpiece of Tadashi Kawamata : Frauenbad

Among the large scale installations, Frauenbad is modeled after a female-only outdoor swimming pool in Zurich of the same name. One day strolling about the riverbank of the Limmat, the artist inquired a friend resident of Zurich, and was interested in the habit of divided pool between man and woman as well as its wooden structure, and created the life-scale artwork on the water as well as in the museum Helmhaus. A set of smaller maquettes together with its plan-drawing present perfectly his idea realized as early as in 1993.

Project based artwork started in eighties, where he realized artist-in-residence program at P.S.1. Alanna Heiss, founder and director of P.S.1, had discovered Kawamata in 1982 for his Japanese pavilion at Venice Biennale, and invited the artist to create first an installation for P.S.1. Kawamta conceived　plans　and　develop　them　through　numerous　meetings　on　the　spot　overcoming　negotiations　to acquire charming place for housing the work. The maquette of this P.S.1 project was also on view in Kiyotsu, together with early works of Kawamata once reserved in his storage.
