Takashi Kuribayashi "Roots": The Museum of Modern Art, Hayama

Takashi Kuribayashi will hold a solo exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, Hayama, Kanagawa, starting on Saturday, December 14. ■Takashi Kuribayashi: Roots Venue The Museum of Modern Art, Hayama Entrance Hall, Auditorium, and Garden etc. Period December 14, 2024–March 2, 2025 About the Exhibition Takashi Kuribayashi was born and raised in Nagasaki, Japan in 1968, and currently living back and forth between Indonesia and Japan. Since the beginning of his career, he has consistently presented works in Japan and abroad that urge viewers to have physical experiences through a variety of media, including drawings, installation works, and videoes, under the theme of “boundaries.” His works come from his deep interest in the relationship between nature and humans. Wald aus Wald (Forest from Forest) (Sensing Nature, 2010, Mori Art Museum), is woods made of Japanese paper spreads throughout in the exhibition room, and Genki-ro series (2020–, Nizayama Forest Art Museum, Toyama, Japan, etc.), is a structure shaped like a nuclear reactor filled with medicinal herb steam which visitors can spend time inside together. In Tanker Project, which commenced in 2021, a tanker is seen as a place where various ecosystems coexist and as a platform for transporting ideas and artworks. Those works are full of stimuli that shake our perceptions. Created from the artist’s perspective, this latest solo exhibition uses various spaces outside of the Museum of Modern Art, Hayama exhibition room. The exhibition will include installations conceived for spaces that are not originally proposed for exhibition, as well as previously unpublished drawings and video works, to show the “boundary = now” between the past and the future of the artist who has been expanding his areas of activity in recent years.

It was made after workshops to think about the topography and history of the Minato Ward. The students created each piece, hoping to convey the current Azabu/Roppongi to the first-time visitors, future visitors, and people from overseas, and to leave a legacy for the future. Yamamoto then put all of them together and completed them as a 10m wide Sugoroku (Japanese board games). This large-scale work will preserve the students' interest in the present, for the future.

Yoshitaka Nanjois currently holding the solo exhibition “Earth Spiral” at the Kanagawa Arts Theatre (KAAT). ■KAAT EXHIBITION 2024 Yoshitaka Nanjo Exhibition| Earth Spiral 2024/9/23(Mondays and holidays)2024/10/20(Sun) https://www.kaat.jp/d/chichu_no_uzu KAAT Exhibition, a unique series by the Kanagawa Arts Theatre (KAAT), continues to explore new forms of expression by merging theatrical space with contemporary art. For its 9th installment, KAAT presents a new KAAT-only installation by acclaimed artist Yoshitaka Nanjo, known for his works that delve into local history and sense of place, including at the Suzu Theater Museum "The Ark of Light" in the Noto Peninsula. The area where KAAT stands has been inhabited since prehistoric times. During Japan’s Westernization movement in the Meiji era, it hosted a foreign settlement as a treaty port, making it a crucial location leading to the modern development of Yokohama. Even today, traces of this history are being unearthed from the soil layers beneath the city. This exhibition invites visitors to descend into Yokohama’s subterranean world. By sensing the presence of nameless individuals “Nanigashi” (某) who once lived here through the buried traces of history and daily life leading up to the present, we are aiming to rediscover the landscapes and lifes we see today.

Shinji Ohmaki is participating in the exhibition "Lines - Consciousness in Flow" at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa starting June 22 (Sat). ■Lines —Aligning your consciousness with the flow 2024.6.22(Sat.) - 2024.10.14(Mon.) The Noto Peninsula, which was hit by the earthquake of 1 January 2024, is the peninsula that protrudes most into this Sea of Japan. In Plateau 2024 by Shinji Ohmaki, the dynamic movement of the continents that make up the world is depicted on a disc, a silver object set above it depicts the sky and ocean above Yamato-tai, and the topography of Yamato-tai is engraved in grooves on a pendulum that moves quietly on the disc. The relationship between land and sea, which changes with time, is always in a state of 'becoming', marking a time different from the axis of time shared by human society. Ohmaki suggests in this work that entities should not be seen as fixed and static, but as something that is captured in a web of relationships and constantly changing in its interaction with the environment, representing the fluctuating 'movement' between the mass of quantity and the nvironment surrounding it.

Iku Harada : Imagining the unseen everyday @Tokyo Shibuya Koen-Dori Gallery

Iku Harada will participate in the "Imagining the unseen everyday" starting on Saturday, February 10. ■Imagining the unseen everyday Period: Saturday, 15 June – Sunday, 1st September, 2024 Venue: Tokyo Shibuya Koen-dori Gallery Admission: Free Society has made strides towards recovering our pre-pandemic everyday routines, as we interact with others, gather, and move about again. Yet just as we were starting to see rays of light, a new disaster has left an imprint in our memories. Each time we are confronted by such events, we feel how precious and fragile everyday life is, while also being reminded of how past memories are pushed deeper and buried by memories of new experiences. In ways large and small, perhaps our day to day is just this process over and over. In this exhibition, six artists consider the repetition of daily life through works that compel us to think about the everyday from a variety of perspectives. Overlooked sights and experiences, or familiar words. Collaboration with someone, somewhere. Recording the day’s important memories and happenings, and ordinary scenes that put us at ease. Each artist’s work offers a window onto the daily lives of others, imbuing our familiar ordinary scenery with new value, and enriching the everyday. The helping hands of others are what restore our bonds with people and society that have been frayed by many stresses. Our daily routines cannot be separated from how people and society relate to—and exert mutual influence on—one another. These artworks explore many ways to feel the presence of others, compelling us to reconsider what separates us from others and society, and see the everyday in a new light.

[Contributed Article] Regarding Shinji Ohmaki's Photogram Works (by Chihiro Minato)

We have received a text from photographer and photo critic Chihiro Minato, regarding Shinji Ohmaki's photogram work "moment," which was presented at the solo exhibitions at the National Art Center, Tokyo and the Art Front Gallery at the end of 2023. The large-scale sculpture "Gravity and Grace," which served as the inspiration for Ohmaki's photogram works, was first presented at the "Aichi Triennale 2016," where Minato served as artistic director. It became one of Ohmaki's representative series over the following years. After several years, the large vase installation, which has been presented in various locations both domestically and internationally, continues to emit its light and shadow, now taking on a new dimension through the form of photograms. This time, Minato speaks about these photograms. Click here for details

The 74th Art Encouragement Prize 2023

Cai Guo-Qiang and Shinji Ohmaki have been awarded the Art Encouragement Prize for Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and Art Encouragement Prize for New Artist respectively for the fiscal year Reiwa 5 (74th) Art Encouragement Prizes. Please look forward to their further achievements. Cai Guo-Qiang: Recipient of the Art Encouragement Prize for Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Reason for Award: For the exhibition " Cai Guo-Qiang: Ramble in the Cosmos―From Primeval Fireball Onward" Internationally acclaimed artist Cai Guo-Qiang has positioned his 1991 solo exhibition Primordial Fireball, where he presented works drawn with gunpowder on folding screens, as a pivotal starting point for his subsequent projects. This exhibition showcased works ranging from these pieces created 30 years ago to recent kinetic LED installations, all within the same venue, demonstrating the trajectory of his activities and his vision for the future. The special exhibition "Cai Guo-Qiang and Iwaki" conveyed his feelings towards Japan, where he spent his formative years as an artist. Cai Guo-Qiang: Ramble in the Cosmos― From Primeval Fireball Onward at The National Art Center, Tokyo (June 29 - August 21, 2023). Shinji Ohmaki: Recipient of the Art Encouragement Prize for New Artist Reason for Award: For the results of the exhibition Shinji Ohmaki: Interface of Being among others. Shinji Ohmaki’s large-scale installations engage the bodily senses of viewers, transforming the exhibition space into an extraordinary environment. Along with the latest version of "Gravity and Grace" presented this time, "Liminal Air Space-Time: Fluctuations of the Vacuum" presented in a pitch-dark room, overwhelms the viewer with the ever-changing appearance of the fabric, which moves and changes with the wind. It also shows the possibility of a new sculpture with a continuously changing sense of volume. Including recent works that incorporate language and video, we look forward to the future of this sculptor who questions human existence itself. Shinji Ohmaki: Interface of Being at The National Art Center, Tokyo (November 1 - December 25, 2023). Yuma Tomiyasu : TERRADA ART AWARD 2023 Finalist Exhibition

Yuma Tomiyasu has been selected as a "Finalist of TERRADA ART AWARD 2023" and will exhibit her work in the "Finalist Exhibition" starting on Wednesday, January 10. Yuma Tomiyasu : Exhibition plan for "TERRADA ART AWARD 2023 Finalist Exhibition" I have been interested in the shift in perspective, such as switching between one's own perspective and that of others. It could be a transcendent being's viewpoint, or it could be a ghost's one. Or it may be the multiple overlapping gazes of the self that transcend dimensions. The viewpoint of dreaming is not captured by the eyes, but we recognize that we indeed see it. Such shifting between multiple perspectives induces a strange sensation of going back and forth between dimensions and makes us aware of the instability of its foundation. The structure of a magic mirror means that when it is not visible from one side, it is visible from the other side. The monitoring camera in the room set in this installation should also show the viewers outside the room, but it will not show the viewers at a time when they can see the monitor. In this work, the programming of the lighting forces the visible objects to shift, thereby shaking up the concept of seeing and being seen. ■TERRADA ART AWARD 2023 Finalist Exhibition Dates: January 10th (Wed) – January 28th (Sun), 2024 Venue: Warehouse TERRADA G3-6F (Warehouse TERRADA G Building 2-6-10 Higashi-Shinagawa, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo 140-0002) FINALIST: Mitsuo Kim、Yuma Tomiyasu、Yuki Harada、Satoshi Murakami、yang02 Final Jury : Takahiro Kaneshima(Associate Professor of Kanazawa College of Art)、Yukie Kamiya(Art Critic, Independent Curator)、Yuki Terase(Art Intelligence Global Founding Partner)、Daito Manabe(Founder of Rhizomatiks, Artist, Interaction Designer, Programmer, and DJ)、Meruro Washida(Director of Towada Art Center, Associate Professor of Tokyo University of the Arts) Primary Selection Jury: Ryo Ikeshiro(Artist, Musician, Researcher, and Assistant Professor of School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong)、Shinji Ohmaki (Artist)、Eriko Kimura (Deputy Director and Chief Curator of Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art)、Ryutaro Takahashi (Psychiatrist, Art Collector)、Yuu Takehisa (Curator, Artistic Director of Contemporary Art Center, Art Tower Mito)、Reiko Tsubaki (Curator of the Mori Art Museum)

Regarding the Noto Peninsula earthquake

The Noto Peninsula earthquake occurred on the 1st January and caused tremendous damage to the city of Suzu, in which we have been deeply involved through the Oku-Noto Triennale. Since then, we have received many offers of support from artists, supporters, and those who have been involved in the festival, both in Japan and abroad, as well as from many people who have visited the festival. We would like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt appreciation. Through art, we have been committed to various regions, including Suzu, and have learned many things from the people we have met and worked with there, and have received strength from them. Now, we would like to return the favor as far as we can. Your continued interest and cooperation would be very much appreciated.
